Infectious Disease Involving
Liver Spread By World War Il
BY EDWIN P, JORDAN, M. D,
Written for NEA Service
During previous wars typhoid,
typhuhsmsll pox, influenza and
other Infectious diseases have oft
en caused serious epidemics. In
World War I' a disease called epi
demie or infectious hepatitis ,while
not as widespread as some of the
epidemig of previous wars, has
nevertheless caused a gdood deal of
trouble.
This infocti‘:us disease h:lu been
occasional out~
m fndividual cases for a
long time and was formerly call
ed catarraal faundice. It is aow
safe to say that it is an infectious
disease involving principally the
liver. It has occurred in more or
less widespread epidemics both in
this country and in many of the
theaters of military operation,
In about 85 per cent of the pa
tientaht:zm is an early period of
the ase lasting a few days,
which precedes the characteristic
appearance of jaundice, or yellow
coloration of the skin. In about
one out of 10 the jaundice appears
at the beginning. The early stage
is usually accompanied by easy
fatigability, slight nausea and al
£most eompiote loss of appetite.
About half of the patients have
@ fever of up to 103 degrees. The
faundice often gives the victim an
Elntanu yellow color of the skin

branes; sometimes the yellow col-

'oration is very slight indeed.
Headache is presemt in a few.
After the jaumgce' has appeared
the second stage lasts from about
two to three weeks. A convales
cent stage is recognized too, last~
ing for one or two months. Usual
ly from six to eight weeks is re
quired for full recovery, though a
few patients ‘may not be (}uite well
even at the end of several months.
A chronic form has been described.
Most seem to recover without
‘any serious or permanent harmful
effect. The most important part of
treatment is to begin strict bed
|rest early and to xeep it up for a
long enough time. A diet contain
ing a high proportion of protein
foods is also used and seems to
shorten the course of the disease.
SUCCUMBIN TO SCIENCE
The cause of this condition is
almost undoubtedly a virus which
is a tiny living organism to small
to see under the ordinary mi
croscope. Infectious hapatitis was
undoubtedly a more serious condi
tion in the army overseas than
among civilians in this country,
but this difference can probably
not be laid at the door of combnt
conditions, ‘
Although much has already
been learned about this disease
we can confidently expect that
much more will be known about it
within a few years. This is a good
example of how new diseases and |
new. health problems keep crop
ping up as the old ones become
conquered. |
POULTRY INTEREST
More than 8,000 Georgia farm
men and women and boys and
glx'll have attended recent coun
y-wide poultry schools. At these
schools, subjects were given and
demonstrations were presented to
help farm families do a better job
of caring for backyard poult.y
flocks.

Grass Fires
InEverglades
Under Control
MIAMI, Fla.,, May 10—(AP) —
Grass fires in the Everglades ap-
peared to be under control today
but weary firefighters kept a
watch on them at three points.
Chief Guy Bender of the Ever
gladus fire control district said the
fire that had raged south of the
Tamiami Trail since Saturday ap
peared to be licked after burning
a strip five to seven miles wide
and 20 miles long about 30 miles
west of Miami,
Another fire started near the
junction of the South New River
and Miami Canals in Broward
county and moved up the east side
of the canal bank about 10 miles
north of the Dade-Broward coun
ty line.
It is burning against the wind
and progress is slow, Bender re
ported.
A third fire being watched was
on Long Pine Key, in the Ever
glades National Park area, Dan
Beard, park superintendent, said
the blaze was growing and caus
ing increased concern.
The Tamiami Trail remained
open to traffic but a shift in the
wind might send the smoke over
the trail and even into Miami, of
ficials said. :
Bender said the Broward county
fire was started by game poachers
hunting out of season and was set
to drive game from cover.
The body needs small quantities
of iodine for growth and develop
ment healthy skin and hair and
mental alertness.

Ghost Business
Is “Not Safe” i
For Atlantians
ATLANTA, May 10—(AP)~—
Eight Atlanta teen-agers have
decided to give up the ghosting
business, after being scared out
of their sheets by what they
thought was a real spook.
Fulton county’s Assistant po
lice Chief E. G. Fitzgerald
chuckled about it today when
he told this story:
A group of boys decided to
take a new acquaintance to a
cemetery and frighten him, Sev
eral fellows were to go ahead of
the rest, don sheets and make
like ghosts when the others ar
rived.
But one smart lad — no names
were released — outdid every~
one. He got to the cemetery
before the others and dressed
in his ghost regalia. When the
other would-be “ghosts” arriv
ed and started pulling on sheets,
he popped up and went into his
act.
Yelps split the air and the
erstwhile “ghosts” fled in terror.
The ploice were called in by
nearby residents who reported
seeing “hooded figures” on the
march—or run.
Bloodhounds tracked the
pranksters to their homes.
