' E FIRE
i
CHIEF
says:
BY CHIEF W, C. THOMPSON
Just as a lot of us who safe
guard the nation’s lives and pro
erty from fire were -beginning to
congratulate ourselves that fire
losses were on .their way down,
along comes the report for losses
in March, 1950. It puts a dent in
our hopes as big as a falling brick
would put in a fireman’s helmet.
The monetary loss in March was
$72,468,000 —the second worst
month in the last 20 years accord
ing to the National Board of Fire
Underwriters. The only month
V?POI a higher. loss was March,
1948, :
Statistics like that are .enough
o make any fire chief sit up and
take stock of his lecal situation.
We know what fire statistics mean.
They represent a lot of individusl
fires in thousands of communi
ties throughout the country. They
represent. trends . in carelessness
that could have their counterpart
in our own community.
At the efld of February, the life
losses for the ending 12-month
period were 4.7 per cent below
those for the preceding-12 months.
But the heavy loss in March puts
the national average for the 12
months ending then only .029 per
cent below that for the preceding
12 months.
Fighting fire is the job of your
fire department, and we are pre
fned to do all we can to keep
osses down, But preventing fires
is largely up to the property
owner, even though we work at
the same job as much as our fa
cilities permit. If you have a par
ticular hazard, or a particular
danger that's bothering you call
us now and let us see if we can
help you eliminate the danger and
stop that fire before it starts. -
OFF-STREET PARKING
GROWS
CHICAGO—(AP)—An increas
ing number of cities are establish
ing off-street parking lots to. re
lieve traffic congestion in their
business districts. The Interna
tional City Managers Association
reports that 380 cities of more
than 10,000 population now own
and operate a total of 828 parking
lots. Sixty-three of the cities
opened municipal lots last year and
100 other cities that previously had
them provided additional lots. -
