E World's Largest
Star Sapphire
InShowing Here
What is by far the largest black
star sapphire ever found in the
world to date will be on display
Friday and Saturday by Walter
R. Thomas Jewelers, 232 East
Clayton Street, and the public is
invited to attend this showing of
more than 10,000 carats of sap
phires valued at more than one
million dollars.
The world’s largest sapphire
known as The Black Star Sapphire
of Queensland weighs 733 carats
and is valued at $300,000.00. The
finished and polished gem now
measures 2 3-16 x 1 27-32 x 1-32,
inches, or about the size of a hen’s
egg. It was cut from a gem which
weighed 1,165 carats or almost a
half a pound.
Stone Found
Last year in a dry river bed in
Queensland, Australia, two pros
pectors picked up a black stone
that filled the palm of a brawny
hand, probably the first hand to
touch it since it came from the
hand of Nature some two billion
years ago. The black star sapphire
was brought to the United States
where it was cut into a cabachon,
or dome shaped, and great skill
and two months of careful plan
ning, cutting, and polishing was
required in finishing this beautiful
gem stone. The gem contains a
perfect asterism or star, produced
by light reflection—a radiant
white light embedded in a gem
that is as black as night. This
phenomina is caused by countless
minute hollow tubes which reflect
the light. |
There are six rays in this per
fect star, and the three cross bars
forming the six rays are, by tradi
tion, known as Faith, Hope and
Love, As the gem is moved, the
star moves when the light strikes
it producing the illusion of a vital
living star moving in the luminous
heavens at night. No Black star
sapphire has ever been imitated.
| They are a beeautiful phenomenon
of nature, crystalized aluminum,
known as corundum, brilliant
| hard and rare. Next to a diamond,
corundum is the hardest known
| gem mineral.
| The Black Star Sapphire of
Queensland is not for sale. It is
| brought here by Walter R. Thom-

ARTISTS WITHOUT ARMS—Despite the handicap of no arms,
these two painters in Deisenhofen, Germany, run a flourishing art
publishing business and have become well-known painters. Bruno
Schmitz-Hochburg, left, lost his arms in an accident 30 years ago.
Arnulf Erich Stegmann, right, was paralyzed when he was two
years old and never regained use of his arms. They employ ser=
eral handicapped persons in their business,

IN THE DOCHOUSE—CooIing their paws in the village hoose
gow are these young canine vagrants at Brooklyn, 0., a Cleveland

down on wandering pups and rounded all he could snare. Brooklyn

their owners bail them out at fines ranging from $56 to S2OO.
