FOR CHICAGO'S FAlß—Betsy Nan Ross isn’t sure whether it’s

Sells Armadillo
As Pets And
Sewing Baske
BY JAY HEAVILIN
NEA Staff Correspondent
CLEVELAND— (NEA) —“The
armadillo gets along fine with rat
tlesnakes and housewives, always
has a litter of four of the same sex,
makes an excellent sewing basket,
and can devour 40,000 ants at a
meal,” drawled J. Y. Dowdy, a
quiet-spoken Texan.
Dowdy crooned “Baby!” A 15~
pound bundle of armor scurried
across a wire-mesh pen, stood up
on its hind legs, and poked its
long, tapering face through an
opening. Dowdy removed the crea
ture and shoved him into the arms
of a potential customer.
It took armadillo-raiser Dowdy
less than 20 minutes so make the
sale. He pocketed $9 and the cus
tomer. gingerly carried a card
board box to his car. Inside the
box were two armadillos.
For 14 years, Dowdy has been
owner and manager of the only
armadillo farm in the world, at
Salado, Tex. He has sold thou
sarids of the animals which look
like a cross between a Sherman
tank and a small pig. '
Not content with this, Dowdy
has also cornered the armadillo
basket market. He employs five
hunters with specially-trained
dogs to track the animals in the
forests of southern Texas. l"i‘heir

Dowdy literally marriec into
armadillos, for his father=in-law,
Charles Apelt, founded the con
cern in 1898. An immidrant bas
ket-weaver from Bermany Apelt
needed only one look at an arma
dillo to know that baskets could
be weaned instead of woven.
Last month marked another
milestone for the Apelt Armadillo
Company. For the first time in
3,000,000 years—the historic age
of the armadillo—an organized
band of the armored animals left
the Lone Star State to meet their
public. The historic chapter was
written in Cleveland, at the Sports
man’s Show, where Dowdy and his
wife introduced their four-legged
wares to Ohioans.
The first reaction displayed by
Clevelanders was one of amaze
ment at the weird beast. A coni
cal-shaped face with tiny head
like eyes and two floppy ears stick
out of a streamlined, armored
shell, Four sharp hooves and a ta
pering tail with hard flexible
joints complete the armadillo’s
adornment.

“Practically everybody asked me
whether armadillos bite,” grinned
Dowdy. “ I made it clear that be
ing insect eaters, they have a few
molars but rarely use them. When
angry, they resort to defensive tac
tics, curling up in their shells so
that no part of their bodies is ex
posed.” Ly s
Others wanted to know whether
armadillos tan be bathed. They
learned that the animals love to
splash in.a shallow pan of water.
Regarding their diet, Dowdy ex
plained that his pets find table
scraps, raw meat, eggs and dog
food most palate-pleasing. ;
In response to the inevitable
question “Why should there be an
armadillo in my life?” Dowdy has
a rapid-fire answer. He vows that
they’re not only unique, bus prac
tical. Being mute, they can’t dis
turb the peace.
“Besides,” adds Dowdy, “what
other animals always has a litter
of four of the same sex?”
