POOR SOIL MAKES
POOR PEOPLE " i
Unconsciously, as the fertility of
our soil has been steadily denle
ted, we have gone from a pro

content in our plants, which were
growing in a soi lunder construc
tion, to a carbonaceousness and a
mineral deficiency in plants grow

Mayor Urges
Observances Of
. 5. Bond Drive
Mayor Jack R. Wells makes the
following statement to the citizens
of Athens concerning the U. S.
Savings Bond Independence Drive,
which opens Monday.
“On Monday, May 15, the U. S.
Savings ~ Bonds Independence
Drive opens throughout the na
tion, .continuing through the
Fourth of July. Its symbol is the
Liberty Bell, encircled by the
campaign theme: Save far Your
Independence — Buy U. S. Sav
ings Bonds.
“The year-round Savings Bonds
program, of which “fhis annual
campaign ic an impertant part,
fosters the spirit of self-reliance
and the urge for self-betterment
that, along with individual enter
prise, inventiveness, productivity
and thrift have carried us steadi
ly forward since the first settlers
braved the wilderness to build a
free America.
“Through regular savings we
build up reserves against misfor
tune and provide income for our
last years, thus lessening the bur
den upon others. We accumulate
funds for worthwhile purchases
nd investments. The buying
power we store up (individual
savings in E Bonds alone exceed
$34,000,000,000 in cash value to
day) helps to stabilize business
and employment through the
vears.
“Ags your mayor, I urge all
who are able to help the volun
teer Savings Bonds Committee of
this city reach every possible
Bond buyer during the campaign.
The more we -exceed our Inde
pendence Drive quota and the
more we spread the habit of reg
ular saving, through the Payroll‘
Savings Plan or purchase of Bonds
at Banks and post offices, the
more we shall have done for our
selves, our community and our
nation. |
“In honor of the Liberty Bell,
hallowed symbol of the American
principles by which we live and
grow and prosper, I call upon our
citizens to signal the opening of
this Independence Drive by the
ringing of bells throughout the
city at noon and the displaying of
our nation’s flag on Monday,
May 15. |

This week has been full of in
teresting things. One day Mrs.
Elliott tried an experiment with
us to see if we could make cork
prints in time with the music. At
first we did very well. Then we
forgot to listen to the music.
Another day we went to the
home of Mrs. Hazel Ivy to hear
her play the harp. The harp was
big and golden and we thought it
was very beautiful. We sat on the
floor in her living room while she
played. The music was lovely and
we were quiet as could be.
Florence Warner liked the mu
sic so much she sat in a big blue
arm chair and leaned way over so
that her head was almost in the
harp. Bobby Lenoir particularly
enjoyed the music too, Later, each
of us had a turn in picking the
strings,
On Friday we visited the Poul
try Farm at the University. Wen
dy Wheeler’s father showed us a
big chicken house where there
were dozens and dozens of new
little baby chicks. Some were
vellow and some were black. Su
san Bell, Dan Cavett and Susanne
Kindig were especially interested
in touching the baby chicks and
holding them in their hands.
We saw some grownup chickens
too; also some geese and turkeys.

We helped Carol Montgomery,

celebrate their birthdays this week.
We each had a little cake and a

“BANDITS” HAVE BANG
UP WEDDING
ATHENS —(AP)— Thirty “ban
dits” raided a small village in
northern Greece recently. But
there were no shots fired, no
houses burned, and no casualties
reported.
The only “loot” was a pretty
Greek maid whose mother hadj
been holding out against her get
ting married. The “bandits,”
friends of the would-be-groom,
revived an ancient Greek village
custom to whisk the girl away
from home, Still brandishing pis
