GOVERNORS GIVE
AUTOGRAPHS
SANTA ANA, Calif.— (AP) —
Walter L. Arney figured the only
way to find out what kind of guys
governors are was to write them.
He did, ana 47 answered
promptly, he says. The 48th, Cal
ifornia’s governor Earl Warren,
apparently needed some prodding.
Arney wrote him six more letters.
All went unanswered. Resorting to
strategy, Arney wrote Mrs. War
ren. This time he got a quick re
ply, plus what he had wanted all
along—Warren’s gignature. Arney,
a semi-invalid, is starting an auto
graph eollection.

VAGABOND PLAYERS
TO MOVE AGAIN
BALTIMORE—(AP)— The his
toric Vagabond Players, with the
longest continuous production re
cord in the country, are being
turned out of their old carriage
house home. The owners are not
renewing the lease. But the Vag
abonds say it doesn’t mean the end
of their string of performances
that reaches back 34 years. They're
looking for a new location so their
season’s productions won’t be in
terrupted.
They started in 1916. Their or
iginal “home,” a vacant store, was
a weird triangular playhouse with
60 uncomfortable séats and a steam
pipe which rose through the floor
of the stage and disappeared in the
flies. It had to be camouflaged as
a tree or a column, depending on
the nature of the play.
The first play was “The Artist,”
by H. L. Mencken. That season
they also had the original produc
tion of “Bound East for Cardiff,”
by Eugene O'Neill. O'Neill was
paid sls to produce the play. The
players soon moved to a hotel ball
room, then in 1922 to larger ac
commodations. But it was in
1930 that they made their big
plunge. They took over the old
carriage house of the Preston es
tate.

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE
LESSON-SERMON
Services of Christian Science
Society are held in the Georgian
Hotel Sunday mornings at 11:15
a. m. -
Subject of the Lesson-Sermon
for Sunday, May 14 is: MORTALS
AND IMMORTALS.
Sunday School 9:45 a. m.
Wednesday evening meetings,
including testimonies of healing
through Christian Science, are
held at the Georgian Hotel on the
first Wednesday of each month at
8 p. m. The public is cordially in
vited. :
Among the citations which com
prise the Lesson-Sermon is the fol
lowing from the Bible: Ye are my
witnesses, saith the Lord, and my
servant whom I have chosen: that
ye may know and believe me, and
understand that T am he: before
me there was no God formed,
J. B. White and Company are pleased to an
nounce the appointments of Mr. J. L. Oldham
and Mr. E. C. Oldham, long time residents of
Athens, Co-Managers of J. B. White and Com
pany in Athens.
Here are just a few specials on floor models
and demonstrators on special sale at J. B.
White this week. fi
neither shall there be after me.
And the world passeth away, and
the lust thereof: but he that doeth
the will of God abideth forever.
Isa. 43:10; I John 2:17,
The Lesson-Sermon also in
cludes the following passages from
the Christian Science textbook,
“Science and Health with Key to
the Scriptures” by Mary Baker
Eddy: God is the Principle of man,
and man is the idea of God. Hence
man is not mortal nor material.
Matter ecannot connect wmortals
with the true origin and facts” of
being, in which all must end. Itis
only by acknowledging the supre
macy of Spirit, which annuals the
claims of matter, that mortals can
lay off mortality and find the in
dissoluble spiritual link which es
tablishes man forever in the di
vine likeness, inseparable from his
creater. P, 476:9-11; 491:11,
