“HE STORY: Clemency Norton
is muksery governess to Syrie and
Joit Amberley’s small daughter
Baba at the home of Jon’s brother
Piers in Algiers. The married cou
ple is obviously dependent on
Piers ' generosity. While exploring
the gardens, Clemency and Baba
meet Piers and are seen with him
by Syrie, who apparently is dis
pleased and orders Clemency to go
to her guarters.

VIII
Alone with Piers, Syrie turned
back towards the house, They
reached it in unbroken silence,
and climbing the three shallow
steps which led up to the veranda,
she sat down in one of the garden
chairs.
Syrie Amberley looked cool, and
perfectly groomed, in her fresh
linen frock.
“Well, here we are again, my
dear — brother.” She gave him a
half ironical glance. “I am sure
you have missed me?”
“There are various ways of
missing people,” he replied, with
out attempting to soften -the
bluntness of the words. “I rather
wondered if you would come
back.”
“Ah! But even then you remem
bered what a mercenary woman I
am.” She smoked for a few mo
mentg in silence, staring across the
garden, her eyes narrowed against
the glare. Then turning her head,
she gave him a direct, challenging
looks “You do dislike me, Piers—
don't you?”
“Intensely,” he agreed without
any trace of emotion.
She was not a sensitive woman;
but something in that celdly im
personal announcement got under
her skin. She winced, her eyes
darkening,
“If you hated me, it would
make life almost endurable. At
least it would show you are alive,”
she ‘burst out. Then recovering
some of her usual poise: “Hate is,
after all, the oppoite end of the
pole to —love.”
He laughed. “I don’t hate you,
Syrie; and I certainly don’t love
ou.”
o% % 8
She gave him an odd look. “How
quite boringly sure of yourself you
are! You don’t know how I should
love to see you forced to shed that
armor. There must be a man in
side it somewhere. I seem to re
member—" Something in his in
tent regard made her break off.
She shrugged her shoulders and
rose, tossing the end of her cigaret
away. “Since we have to live un
der the same roof, can’t we at
least be—friendly enemies?”
“You know why you are here,
Syries Don't forget the reason,”
he advised, and without waiting
for a reply, turned and went into
the house.
Syrie stood looking after him,
her hands clenching and unclench
ing. Throwing oneself against a
stone wall is not a pleasant pas
time, She wondered savagely why
every now and then she seemed
forced to do it.
She was in a, viciously angry
mood, when a few minutes later,
she entered the nursery; though
from her smiling exterior it would
have been difficult for anyone who
did not know her to have guessed.

FOR REAL SAVINGS ...BUY JERRELL'S
Syrie sat down,amo reflection of
the smile on hefelips in her ice
blue eyes. e
‘Y hope you seep i you are
going to be happy, Miss Norton?”
she asked with deceptive friend
liness. “If you have any difficulty
with the servants, or—anything of
that kind, remember that as far as
the nurseries are concerned, you
are the person to give orders and
see that they are obeyed.”
“Thank you; but I don’t think
I am likely to have troukble,”
Clemency replied, rather surpris
ed. “Louilie and Ahmed both seem
very willing todo anything I ask
them to.”
“Good. Servants can be so diffi
cult!” Syrie jerked her shoulders
impatiently, *“As I told you, when
I engaged you. I hate being both
ered over nursery details, This is
your unquestioned domain, Don’t
let anybody interfere with you—
not even oJn! I suppose you will
have some sort of itinerary for
lessons and things?”
“Oh, yes,” agreed Clemency. “I
shall begin with teaching Bara
her alphabet, simple counting and
that kind of things—"
.“Well, I shall leave it all en
tirely in your hands. And of
course you will arrange with Lou
ilie when you want time off. You
can have a car one day a month,
and sometime oftener if you be
gin to feel you are serving a life
sentence.” She rose, surely the
most easy of employers. Then hes
itating: “There’s just one thing
—do you mind keeping to your
own quarters?” She indicated the
flower-filled square beneath the
windows. “I don’t like Bara wan
dering all over the place. You can
get out onto the road by that door
and there are walks all about the
Qasis.”
“Of course, Mrs. Amberley, I—"
“I'm so sorry to—sort of box
you in.” Syrie’s smile flashed.
“The truth it—it's — well, just’'a
little awkward. I like to keep
Bara away from Colonel Amber
ley as much as possible, because
really although he is quite sweet
to her, I know he is bored with a
child about the place.” She looked
at Clemency with a charming em
barrassment. “Between you and
me, Miss Norton, I don’t think any
house was ever built large enough
to contain two families — espe
cially such a born bachelor as Col
onel he is actually a recluse — if
ment he is actually a reclure — if
he wasn’t so frightfully fond of
Jon, and had not been so worried
about his health, I don't think
anything would have induced him
to let even .us into his home.
Again, strictly between ourselves,
he almost dislikes women. You
see — of course you don’t let this
go any farther—he wasonce ter
ribly in love with someone.” Then
in a lighter tone: “The trouble for
our sex is that they will fall for
him. He can have very pretly
manners, and that raises hope in
the poor things. Kathleen used
absolutely to lie in wait for him;
and the first girl I brought out
made an absolute idiot of herself.”
“You needn't worry, Mrs. Am
berley,” said Clemency quietly.
“I shall see that Bara is kept away
from her uncle.”
