NEW YORK— (NEA) — The
circus’ big :‘rectacle trudges
around the sawdust track as the
big show rehearses, with the band
banking out a brassy beat. Here
and there walk middle-aged men
in business suits, waving. up at
the empty stands.
You ask who those men arve,
what they are doing.
“They’re the clowns!” .
They're not funny. They look
like people you'd meet on the
street. It’s y:fgd . of disillusion
ing. You think that, even without
their beaming noses and gaudy
cheeks, a clown would still look
different, son:ehew.. |
There's nothing as shocking as‘
an aerobat in mufti. A balding
man in a yellowand brown
T-shirt sits down nearby. He
looks like a carpenter. or maybe
& shoe salesman.
Then he walks out into one of
the rings and begins a series of
tremendous flip-flops. . You
wouldn’t think, from ‘looking at
him, that he could do anything
more strenuous than deep breath
ing exercises. You expect your
acrobats to have muscles like
grapefruit in their arms. They
haven't.
Bronzed Giant
During the spectacle, you spot
ted a bronzed giant riding around
on a horse. He was portraying
Abraham Lincoln in the pageant,
“Dream of Democracy.” |
Later, he comes and begins
talking to some others in the row
in front of you. Abraham Lincoln
is a German. The bronzed giants |
can’t speak a word of English, |
Another shock. |
A man and a woman juggler |

track. The girl is a beautiful bru- |
nette, wonderfully coordinated, l
with the tall, lean, lithe figure |
you expect'a juggler to have. |
After they finish, she wipes her |
face with a towel and walks past |
you. She isn’t tall. She’s short and '
solid. Her hands, that were so sure 1
as they twirled silvery batons and |
painted balls, fumble nervously as |
she lights a cigarette. i
You spot two kids walking along |
the edge of the rail. They're about |
four or five. Brought up in the
circus, you figure, imagining that
they're the offspring of some dare
devil tight-rope walker, already |
learning the trade that has been in |
the family for centuries.
You ask who those kids are.
“Never saw ’'em before in my |
life,” says an old circus hand.

mense strides. Here is the circus
at its peak. You study him think

JET-BORNE “WING” TAKES WING—The newest of the Air Force's jet planes, the Northrup
Flying Wing photo-reconnaissance bomber, roars off the runway at Hawthorne, Calif., for its
maiden flight to Edwards Air Force base, Muroc, Calif. First of the big “wings” equipped for full
tactical operation, the plane combines long range and high-altitude performance. It has six turbo
iet engines, four within the wing and two suspended in pods.

Giants shouldn’t wear pin-stripe
suits, they shouldn’t look tired.

easily, with no net underneath,
sometimes hanging from their legs
as they go about their work.
Those must he the men on the

ropes they use in their death-de

“Nah,” says the old circus hand.

HORSE SENSE—LADY WONDER
"TALKS" ON BIG TYPEWRITER
y BY PAUL DUKE
2.0 AP Newsfeatures .......
" 'RICHMOND, Va. — This world
could do with more horse sense.
Good old fashioned horse sense
~—the kind Lady Wonder has,
- She’s a horse, I met the other
day. Quite a girl, too. The Lady
is not only an authority on the
earth’s problems, but on most any
other subject as well. Doesn’t
mind - sharing her knowledge,
either. :
Oh, she looks like any other
horse — black-coated, speckled in
gray round the mane, with four
white feet. A trifle on the weighty
side, too.
But after two hours in her pres
ence I am prepared to admit that
Lady is somewhat different from
most of her kin—at least the ones
I have met. n
_ Animal World Scholar -
For one thing, she has more
than the usual quota of horse
sense. She’s a real brain, if you
ask me, a sort of Phi Beta Kappa
of the animal world. #
Ot no, she doesn’t talk. The
Lady uses the hunt and peck sys
tem. In her stall, there’s a rather
crudely contrived board with
letters and numbers fitted down
into tiny slides.
‘When the Lady voices opinion she
simply lowers her chin, touches
a lever extending out from each
slide, and the letter or figure
shoots up—just like a typewriter.
Lady’s owner, Mrs. C. D. Fonda,
introduced me as “Mr. Duke.” But
Lady quickly dispensed with for
mality and clicked out a chummy
“Paul” even though she had no
foreknowledge of my first name.

~ With that sendoff, Lady and I
chatted like a couple of old hens
—I the asgink, she the answering.
From Mrs. Fonda, who has rais
ed Lady since she was a three
yer-old colt, I learned that the
horse is something of a wizard at
soothsaying. Midway in Franklin
D. Roosevelt’s second term she
forecast that he would be elected
president not only for a third, but
also a fourth term.
In December 1940, she predict
ed America’s entry into the war a
year later. i
Don’t get the notion Lady is
perfect. She’s flubbed a few times,
too. Such as two years ago when
she fell in line with all the other
pollsters and prophesied a Dewey
victory. ’
I asked Lady how much I made
weekl, Bingo! Like that, she
flashed back the correct figure.
Thinking the digits might be a
little low on that one, I scribbled
down two other numbers on a pad.
Same result.
Mrs. Fonda, a graying little lady
who refers to her pet as an “edu
cated horse,” grinned and said
something about folks always try
ing to “catch” Lady. Not long ago,
she related, some fellow wanted to
know whether his wife was true
to him.
To which Lady whimpered and
replied:
“Are you?”
An Expert on Love
The sightseers who stop off at
Mrs. Fonda’s yellow frame house
on the edge of Richmond ask * dy
everything from “will get falling
hair?” to “which horse will win
the sixth at Belmont?”
By far the most popular ques-
tions, though, ave those having to
‘@9 with love and marriage., Each
person gets three questions for 60
cents.
Lady has been doing this type
of thing for more than 20 years.
Occasionally, a psychologist comes
along to test Lady.
In 1946, Dr. Thomas L. Garrett,
New. York psychologist-editor, de
clared her to be a “genuine pre
nomenon.” He said he could find
“no trickery Involved.”
The conclusion was nothing
new. As long ago as 1928 three
Duke University psychology pro
fessors reported: “There appear
tv be no loopholes, no reasonable
possibility for signaling, either of
:ta conscious or unconscious charac
er.”
Lets Secret Out
I thought about a tipoff sys
tem between Lady and her mis-.
tress. But she has answered ques
tions when Mrs. Fonda wasn't
nearby.
.How does she do it? I asked
Lady herself,
She paused for a moment then
spelled out m-i-n-d. Then, I asked
her if she’d like to be a human
being.
Unhesitatingly, she answered
“yes.” Poor thing, I thouzht. May
be she doesn’t deserve that Phi
Beta Kappa rating after all.
