you what he’s going to do, you
can expect the worst,” the former
governor asserted yesterday dur
ing five talks in Gordon and Wal
ker counties,
He also accused Talmadge of
breaking promises, mentioning
specifically a campaign promise to
retail gasoline dealers.
Thompson read a letter which
he said Talmadge sent so the
Georgia Petroleum Retailers As
sociation during the 1948 cam
paign, pledging to support legisla~
tion to grant retail dealers a two
per cent tax discount.
Then he quoted from a speech
in the Senate when the bill was
killed. He quoted Sen. Lee Pur
dom of Blackshear as telling the
Senate the Governor had said he
was “hooked into that position,
that the letter pledging support
was sent from his headquarters
while he was out campaigning.”

The University
The annual student art exhibi
tion will open Thursday evening,
May 25, in the Fine Arts Gallery.
The publie is cordially invited to
attend the opening reception from
8 to 10 p. m, The Shorter awards
will be presented at that time.
The purpose of the exhibition
will be to show a cross-section of
the best work done in the Depart
ment of Art during the academic
year 1949-50.
The faculty chairmen of the
various fields who also serve on
the juries of selection in their areas
are as follows: Painting, Howard
Thomas; Drawing and Sculpture,
Henry Madden; Art Structure,
Peggy Pat Horne; Design, Eulala
Amos; Commercial Art, Edvard
Johnson; Ceramics, Earl MecCut
chen; Art Education, Sibyl
Browne; Interior Design, Harold
Wescott; Crafts, Wiley Sanderson.
This exhibition promises to be
one of the most exciting and com
prehensive groups of student art
work yet to be assembled at the
University of Georgia.
Tommy Walker of Decatur, Ga.
won the competition for designing
the Shorter Award medal. He is
a senior, majoring in commercial
art, at the University of Georgia.
Mr. Wiley Sanderson of the art
faculty announced the decision of
the judges. Runners-up in com
petition were Jeanne Tribble of

the University of Georgia, will de

afternoon at 4:30 in the F. A. Gal

upon the topic, “Judgment of
Works of Art.” The subject of this
concluding lecture will be “The

has just received the $50.00 prize
offered by the Mississippi Art As
sociation in the 9th Annual Na-~
tional Watercolor Exhibition held
at Jackson, Mississippi. The award
went to his transparent watercolor
entitled, “From the Market,”
which shows an unusually interest
ing still-life grouping. The water
color show will be hung in the
Municipal Art Gallery until May
31st.
The art faculty of the University
of Georgia is participating in an
exhibition at the Mint Museum in |
Charlotte, N. C. It is a representa- |
tive cross-section of work from

In the area of drawing and
painting, there is an oil, “Rocks
and Waves” by Lamar Dodd and
another oil, “The Bush” by Carl
Holty., Annie May Holliday is
showing a drawing “Wood Roses”
and Erwin Breithaupt also sub
mitted a drawing. Three other oils
by Howard Thomas, Edvard John
son and Julia Tolbert are included
in the group as well as a casein
painting by Peggy Pat Horne,
The Department of Ceramics is
displaying a pitcher by Earl Mc-
Cutchen, a bowl by Ezra Sellers,
and a blue plate with a sterling
silver decorative design by Eulala
Amos. Wiley Sanderson is repre=
sented by a turned hickory bowl
with a cast bronze base.
This group of art work demon
strates the various directions of
creative research work carried on
by faculty members.
Gradute students from the Art
Department of the University of
Georgia have already begun se
curing positions for the academic
year 1950-51, Lewis Thompson
and David Michael have complet
ed work on their Master of Fine
Arts degrée with majors in paint
ing. Lewis Thompson has accepted
a teaching position at Hollins Col
lege, Virginia in their art de
partment and David Michael plans
to go to Birmingham Southern at
Birmingham, Ala. He will teach
classes in drawing and painting
and art history.
Peggy Pat Horne, who has done
graduate work here and has been
a teaching assistant as well, will
go to Huntingdon College in Mont
gomery, Alabama, as an Assistant
professor of art.
