Poor Man's Philosopher Says o
Duke Of Windsor Is Happy Man *
BY HAL BOYLE
NEW YORK.—(AP)—“To be as
happily married as I am-—I call
that a good life,” said the Duke
of Windsor,
He had just finished watching a ‘
filnr screening of his first televis
ion appearance,
I had been invited to see the
screening in the offices of “March
of Time.” Before going, on the
offchance that the Duke himself
might show up, I went around my
own office and asked a number of
men and women: “What is the
thing youd'd like to know most
today about the Duke of Wind
sor?”
It turned out that most wanted
to know these things: ks he hap
py? Does he have any regrets over
giving up his throne?
Shortly before the hour of
screening the Duke did show up
—wearing an ageless smile, a
jaunty red polka dot bow tie, and
a gray striped flannel suit. The
years have touched him lightly.
He will be 56 next month, but he
still has an air of timeless youth,
He said he was sorry the Duch
ess couldn't come,
~ During the showing of tls film
‘the Duke joked light-heartedly
about his acting ability.
“My, I look so old,” he laughed
at one point,
Afterward I joined a group
chatting with the Duke. I told
hinr what my fellow workers
wanted to know about him, and
he seemed genuinely pleased at
their interest,
“Certainly Happy”
“I certainly am happy,” he
smiled, “although the world today
ig not & very happy place.”
“What do you miss most now
from your days as king?”
“I don’t miss being king, but 1
do miss my country and working
for it,” he said. “I never have an
idle moment. The day is not half
long enough—even when I'm not
writing.”
The Duke has been busy the
last three yearg writing the story
of his life from the end of the
first World War to the erowded
days of his abdication. It is now
appearing in Life Magazine,
“We are leaving for France
next week,” he said, “There I'm
going to complete my book.” The
expanded memoirs are to be pub- ‘
lished next fall by Putnam’s.
The Duke has found an au
thor’s life isn’t an easy one,
“It’s hard work—this writing,”
he grimaced.
The Duke declined to comment
on world political events or the
progress of the cold war.
“I'll leave that to others,” he
said. “I keep my fingers crossed.”
Rarely Rides
The Duke no longer keeps a
stable of horses and rarely rides.

Many people in today’s world of

He thought the question odd.
