HOLLYWOOD—(NEA)—Vivian
Blaine, the slim red-haired movie
queen who became a pleasingly
buxom blonde night club singer,
has only one regret—she should
have bleached sooner.
“I don’t look like Vivian Blaine
anymore,” she said, “and it’s won
derful. I'm making more money
and I'm happier.”
~ Red-haired Vivian skyrocketed
to stardom during the war in Fox
musicals, then was shelved. Re
cently she went back to Fox and
asked a big executive:
“Tell me the truth. What was
wrong with me?”
The executive replied: “No sex
appeal. But you've got it now,
sister.”
Vivian said she lost out on the
role Marilyn Maxwell played in
“Champion” because the producer
looked at some film in which she
was a cold redhead. |
“I wish,” said Vivian, “that Hol- ‘
lywood would stop looking at me
on the screen as of four years ago,
and start looking at me now in
person.”
She’s so right. The change in
personality is startling.
Now she goes on the road with
Jack Benny’s troupe. Jack was
smart. Instead of looking at Viv
ian’s movies, Ee looked at Vivian,

Treatment Of Bright's Disease
Depends On Victim's Condition
By EDWIN P. JORDAN, M. D.
Written for NEA Service
Bright’s disease or nephritis can
be either acute or chronic and the
symptoms, treatment and outlook
vary accordingly. In a typical
acute case the symptoms come on
suddenly but without pain. A feel
ing of discomfort, puffiness under
the eyes, some swelling of the
lower part of the legs and lessened
and perhaps even bloody urine are
common, |
Slight fever and chilly sensa
tions may develop. Headache, nose
bleed, loss of appetite, and in chil
dren even convulsions, are some
times present. Lessened urine and
a dark, cloudy or bloody tinge to
it is frequent.
The diagnosis requires careful
study by the physician of the
urine, blood pressure, chemistry of
the blood and physical condition,
If the nephritis is in the acute

stage, bed rest is necessary. The
diet has to be carefully adjusted to
the ability of the kidneys to care
for the food eaten.
The disease often comes from
infection with germs called strep
tococei. Most streptococei yield
to the sulfa drugs or to penicillin.
For this reason, it may be possible
to stop some streptococcus infec
tions before they have had a
chance to injure the kidneys and
cause Bright’'s disease. There
have been some suggestions that
one of the adrenal cortical hor
mones might help but it is too soon
to know yet and this is in the ex
perimental stage.
In chronic nephritis, the symp
toms tend to be less severe than
in the acute variety. The accumu
lation of dropsical fluid, or edema,
is more or less typical, but there
may not be much at first.
When severe the swollen legs
and discomfort in walking miy be
most uncomfortable and unpless
ant. There can be dropsical fluid
inside the abdominal cavity and
elsewhere and this is not good.
Fluids Eliminated
The methods used to bring about
the elimination of some of the
excess fluids include drugs which
are called diureties, which stimu
late temporarily the secretion of
urine. Removal of accumulated
fluids in the abdomen, through a
needle, is sometimes necessary.
The diet is important and has to
be watched and adjusted with
great care.
Improvements and changes in
dietary management have been
made in the last few years, but
chronic nephritis is still a serious
condition.
