McMAHAN SAYS: 1
In Proporii
n Proporfion
Of Populafi
“In spite of the popularized no
tion that the Southeast is ‘boom
ing,’ it does not contain as large a
proportion of the national popula
tion today as it did 10 years ago,”
C. A. McMahan, population ana
lyst in the sociology department of
the University of Georgia, stated
at the first annual Southeastern
Forum for Marketing Problems in
Atlanta on Thursday.
Dr. McMahan's address, entitled
“Regional Population Trends Af
fecting Demand for Consumer
Goods,” pointed up recent changes
in the number, distribution, and
composition of the population in
the Southeastern states. Mr. Har
ry W. Martin. graduate assistant
in the department of sociology at
the University or Georgia, colla
borated with Dr. McMahan in the
preparation of the paper which
was presented to- the conference,
and accompanied him to the meet
ing.
In accounting for the failure of
the Southeast to keep pace with
the rest of the country in rate of
growth, McMahan cited heavy out
ward migration as the major fac
tor. But for this consideration,
natural increase wouid have sped
up the growth considerably, he
stated,
Urbanization Trend
“There has been an especially
heavy movement to nonfarm areas
adjacent to large cities,” Dr. Mc-
Mahan said in speaking of the
trend toward urbanization.
He directed the attention of the
conference to the slight increase
in the number of households, the
rise in educational levels, the high
level of employment, and the in
crease in the level of living as
significant factors in market plan
ning.
Appearing on the two-day pro
gram with Dr. McMahan were Ev
erett R. Smith, president of the
American Marketing Association,
New York; W. Wailes Thomas,
general commercial development
engineer of the Southern Bell Tel
ephone and Telegraph Company,
Atlanta; and Howard C. Grives,
Assistant Director of the Bureau
of the Census, Washington.
Health Official
Dies
Wreck Injuri
John E. Ransom, Director of the
Hospital Division of the Georgia
Department of Public Health
since 1945, died Thursday morn
ing in Atlanta as a result of in
juries received in an automobile
accident April 29 on the Atlanta-
Marietta Highway.
Mr. Ransonr made a notable
contribution to Georgia’s health
in promoting Georgia’s hospital
and health center construction
program under the Hill-Burton
Act. Under his administration 70
hospitals and health centers have
been built or started in the state.
He visited Athens in connection
with medical center work and
Athens General Hospital addition.
Mr, Ransom had rich experi
ence in hospital administration
work. At one time he was super
intendent of the Toledo Hospital,
Toledo, Ohio; executive secretary
of the Hospital Council of Greater
New York, and assistant director
of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Bal
timore.
Mr. Ransom was born in Ambey,
Ohio, September 11, 1881. He re
ceived his education in the public
schools of Kingsville, Ohio, and at
the University of lilinois. He is
survived by his widow,
“The passing of Mr. Ransom is
an irreparable loss not only to the
Georgia Department of Public
Health but also to the entire State
of Georgia. I know of no man who
acquired a wider range of friends
and admrirers than had John Ran
som. The-only conselation is that
in his administrative wisdom he
has built up a department that
can carry on his work-most effec
tively,” Dr. T. F. Sellers, director
of the Georgia Department of
Public Health, said today.
Janes Sitton of the Georgia
Department of Public Health has
been appointed acting director of
the Hospital Division by Dr. Sel
lars and the Staie Board of
Health. ;
