Fabric Exhibition
In Georgia Museum
In the Georgia Museum of Art
at the University, the very popular
exhibition of sculpture from the
National Sculpture Society, New
York City, will end on Friday,
May 26. The Museum will not be
open for visitors on May 27 to May
31, as the new exhibition for June |
of hand woven fabrics and other
crafts created by the Jay Ham
bridge Art Foundation of North
Georgia will be arranged.
Few are aware of the fine work
The Jay Hampridge Art Founda-
The Jay Hambridge Rrt Founda
tion, Inc., has 800 mountain acres
near Dillard, Ga., on which this
creative industry is conducted. For
‘over twenty years Mrs. Hambridge
has instructed the mountaineers
in weaving and other arts and
crafts. The women of the region
come and work part time or for a
‘five day work week, Their wages
enable them to dress their fami
lies and their homes better. Their
original designs in woven fabrics
are sold in New York for altar
clothes in churches, dress goods
for curtains and other interior
decorations of Park Avenue and
Fifth Avenue apartments.
The fabrics are made of natural
raw materials, silk, linen, cotton
and wool. The wool is cut from
sheep raised on the place which is
carded, spun and woven in the
work shops of the Foundation.
They use no synthetic yarns, nor
is any commercial dye employed.
All colors are mixed by Mrs.
Hambridge herself from secret
color processes. The reason for the
glorious effect and long life of
their fabrics is that each piece is
individually created both in dye
ing and weaving. This exhibition
offers a welcome opportunity to
get acquainted with the best orig
inal fabrics made in Georgia. The
| display will be in the Dodd Gal
| iery, Georgia Museum.
| In the Memorial Gallery of the
' Museum appropriate paintings
from the Holbrook Collection will
|be shown. Spinning wheels and
other weaving apparatus will be
found. The Department of Art of
the University of Georgia will
also show a fine collection of pot
tery and handcraft created under
the leadership of Earl McCutch
eon, head of the Ceramic Depart
ment. The whole exhibition will
comprise an All-Georgia Crafts
Exhibition.
