After a morning of irritation, the

“You simply ruin Baba, Jon!™
exclaimed Syrie, with such cold
viciousness that Clemency was
startled. “You always have made
a fool of yourself over the child,
and you've no right to interfere in
the nursery, Miss Norton knows
best what is good for Baba and if
I were her, I would not put up
Wtifl;l’ your interference for a min
ute.
That was perhaps not quite fair,
but without waiting to hear any
more Jon Amberley, white with
anger, flung out of the room, shut
ting the door sharply behind him.
Syrie shrugged her shoulders.
“It’s obvious where Baba gets her
temper! I warned you that Jon
would utterly ruin her if he were
allowed to.”
Clemency made no comment;
the whole scene had been extreme
ly distasteful. Syrie only lingered
to tell her that she was expecting
some friends tomorrow, and would
like Baba—if she were behaving
herself—to be brought downstairs
after tea.
& % €
By the time her charge was
safely up for the night, the weath
er showed signs of clearing; but
even if the rain had still been tor
rential, Clemency knew that she
could not have stayed in another
minute. Warning Louilie to listen
in case Baba woke up and wanted
anything, she put on her mackin
tosh, and tying a handkerchief
over her head, sallied forth.
Clemency hesitated. It would
soon be very dark, and though
somewhere up there a moon was
growing towards the full, its light
would probably be dimmed. But
she felt she needed more freedom
of exercise than just walking
round the tiled paths of the court
yard gave scope for, and decided
to go along the road; she would
hardly be likely to meet anyone
unfriendly.
About half a mile along, the
road forked, one portion of it run
ning down to the banks of the
small river which watered the
oasis. There were some flat stones,
and sitting down on one of them,
Clemency pulled the handkerchief
off her hair, and raised her face,
took a deep breath.
She remained musing while the
African darkness, which falls like
a suddenly dropped cloak, had
come down over the land. ’
She was trying to make up her
mind to move, when the sound of
a quick, firm step on the road be
hind her made her turn her head
sharply.
“Good gracious, I though you
were a ghost! What on earth are
you doing here, Miss Norton?” ex~
claimed Piers Amberley. ‘
** @ |
“Colonel Amberley! No, I'm not
a ghost. I'm equally relieved to
find that you are not a wandering
nomad.” |
Clemency was already on her
feet; her heart was beating very
fast indeed now.
“A wandering nomad is perhaps
the least likely danger you might
meet,” he replied. “Sitting about
on boulders without first investi
gating what may be lurking
around, is not an altogether safe
pastime in these parts. St. Patrick
never visited Algeria.” :
“Snakes!” exclaimed Clemency.
“Oh, no., I never dreamt of
snakes.”
“Quite seriously, Miss Norton,”
he said, “you ought not to be as
far from the house as this, alone
after dark. I can vouch pretty well
for the regular inhabitants of Sidi
Baratta, but there is always the
chance of that wandering nomad
who might have dishonest inten
tions; or even some mad fanatic,
That great space is not altogether
uninhabited — we’ve had some
queer characters drift in occasion=
ally, And even here there are
echoes of what is brewing farther
East —though, thank goodness,
they are faint at present.”
She said half apologetically: “I
didn’t really mean to stay out
long. I only came for a breath of
fresh air.”
Reading between the lines, he
understood more clearly than she
would have given him credit for
doing,
“I gather there was a spot of
trouble today.”
Clemency felt that she did not
want to discuss it with him.
“Oh—nothing very much,” she
said, and could have kicked her
self. Why must she sound so prim
and “governessy,” just because
she was talking to Piers Amber
ley?
“My niece can be something of
a handful,” said Piers. And that
was his sole comment.
“I won’t get into mischief again,”
she promised, when they were in
sight of the outer walls of the
house now. “I will go in this way.
Good night, Colonel Amberley, and
—thank you.”
“Good night—" But she had al
ready opened the door leading to
the nursery courtyard. It closed
softly, and she was gone.
Piers paused to light a cigaret
before he resumed his walk.
An odd young woman. Difficult
to get to know.
