Local Candidates Are
Guests At Luncheon
BY RANDALL COUCH
Candidates in the forthcoming
Siate Democratic primary, June
93. and the City General Election,
which takes place on June 5, ap
peared before the Clarke County
Women Voters at a Iluncheon
meeting in Holman Hotel Tues
day at one o'clock.
Among the candidates present
were Robert Stephens, jr., present
City Attorney who is seeking elec
tion to State Senate, John Elliott,
Grady Pittard, jr., John Hunni
itt, 111, Kent Hill and Chappelle
latthews, all seeking seats in
state House of Representatives,
vde Basham and James Barrow,
+ho seek the post of City Attor
v, Mr. Matthews is seeking an
ndorsement term and is opposed
v Mr. Elliott, while Pittard, Mr.
Hill, and Mrs. Hunnicutt are seek
ing the seat wvacated by C. O.
Daker, a candidate for governor.
D. E. Massey, who opposes Mr,
Stephens in the Senate race, was
unable to attend the luncheon be
cause of illness in his family.
Mrs. Annie Griffeth, president
of Clarke Women Voters, presided
at the meeting.
In reference to a sales tax Mr.
Elliott said, “There is no use anti
cipating a sales tax wuntil one
knows who the next governor of
Georgia will be.”
“I favor adequate teacher’s sal
avies according to services ren
‘ered, an adequate retirement
fund which is in line with similar
funds for other employees of the
county and city for all teachers,
and I also favor adequate health
facilities, Mr. Elliott continued.
“I've had the experience to do
you a service' and I'll do it,” he
stated in conclusion.
City Code
Senate™ candidate Stephens
spoke of his services as City At
torney, saying that he has per
formed his duties to the best of
his ability. He mentioned:the now
almost-complete revision of the
city code, taking no credit for said
revision but eommending Mayor
and Council of the city and others
who assisted in this work.
‘ln my campaign for State
Senate,” averred Mr. Stephens, “I
am not on the bandwagon of any
candidate for .governor of the
state, nor am"l aligned with any
of the other candidates present
here today.”
“I will not run down my Ooppo
ponent, but rather commend him
to you, for he is a fine man of a
respected family. I attended law
school with one of his sons, and
[ know of no finer people,” MTr.
Stephens said,
“l am totally in favor of the
financing of the Minimum Foun
dation Program, for education, 1
believe, is the one thing for which
We pay taxes and on which we
receive over 100 per cent return.
[ will vote for an integrated sales
tax if necessary, but not for a
sales tax superrimposed on pres
ent taxes,” he continued.
Mr. Pittard stated he had no de
sire to degrade his ts(ponmts in
any way, saying, “I ask no one to
believe that my candidacy is built
on the basis that my opponents
tannot serve you.”
Referring, to his aducational
background and qualifications, Mr.
Pittard said, “I waniwomk.eusetg:

cratic form of government, and
there are many things for which
I would like to work.”
“I would like to make the fi
nancing of the Minimum Founda~
tion Program the first order of
business in the next session of the
House of Representatives, and I
assure that I will do all in my
power to that end if I am elected,”
he continued.
“I advocate a just tax revision,
as I feel that revision is necessa
ry. I also believe that we must
have Home Rule in our counties
and cities, I think our state Uni
versity should be placedron a basis
above that of any other similar
institution in the South, and I do
not approve of decentralization of
the University — a movement re
ported underway to move various
departments of the University to
Atlanta.”
Spoofing the idea that he is
merely 19 years of age — some
reports having been made to that
effect — John Hunnicutt, 111, stat
ed that he is 29.
“My reason for getting into this
race,” he said, “is that I have al
ways been called a hypocrite —
one who talked brashly but did
nothing. I feel that I have the best
of interests in Clarke county, and
I have no intention of leaving this
county, contrary to some things
I have heard.”
“I am not a servant or an in
trument for any group here or in
Atlanta or elsewhere — I am the
servant of the voters, the citizens
of Clarke county. I make no Santa
Claus promises, as I believe that
anyone pays for anything he gets,”
Mr. Hunnicutt went on.
“I do promise you that if I am
elected you will have an honest,
100 percent efficient representa
tive from this county.”
: Endorsemexfil‘erm
Mr. Matthews satd, “I am run
ning strictly for an endorsement
term.”
He mentioned many things done
in Clarke county during his pres
ent term, saying that he is grati
fied to have been able to cooper=
ate with other officials and groups
in bringing to the county these ad
vantages —the addition to the
hospital, several new bridges, the
Regional Library and new dormi
tory facilities for the University
here in Athens.
“T advocate adequate teachers’
salaries and retirement fund, the
necessary financing of the Mini
mum Foundation Program, a §ales
tax if necessary and certainly tax
revision. I have continually fought
for Home Rule, and I will con
tinue to do so if I am re-elected,”
he said. “I want to finish the
work I have begun.”
Mr. Hill stated: “I served six
years in the Legislature from this
county in the past, and I feel that
my experience would prove a
great help to our University, I ad
vocate the financing of Minimum
Foundation, and I favor Home
Rule.
Mr. Barrow stated that the post
of City Attorney, which he is
seeking, is not a policy-making of
fice. “Both my opponent and I
are qualified, we are both mem
bers of the bar, and I am certain
that both of us would like to have
the office.”
Mr. Basham commended Mr.
Stephens, the present City Attor
ney,.crediting him with the major
-portion of the work which result
ted in the recent revision of the
City Code.
In reference to his past service
to the citv, Mr. Basham pointed
out his service as alderman. “
was not controlled while a mem
ber .of council, and I will never
be controlled in any office,” he
said.
«If T am elected to the post of
City Attorney,” he said, “I prom
ise to always be available, regard
less of who callr on me for serviee
which falls unaer the jurisdiction
of that office. If I am elected I
hope that I will be able so do as
well ag Mr. Stephens, and I trust
that I will always have the cour
age to state my convictions as well
as the law, as Mr. Stephens has
done during his term of office.”
In a business meeting following
the candidates’ speeches members
of Clarke Women Voters agreed
to donate $25 to the local sehool
boy patrol fund which is to be
used to finance a trip for the en
tire patrol to the State Capital.
Total finances necessary for the
trip, it was announced, will
amount to SIOB. Officer Emory
Sanders of local police force 1S to
accompany the ! oys to Atlanta. -
The University of Arizona foot
pail team will play Oregon in Eu
