Gong For Round Two Sounds As
Movies And Video Slug It Out
- NEA Staff Correspondent
- HOLLYWOOD ~—(NEA)-— The
movies vs. television siug-fest, al
ready called “show business' bat
tle of the century” by Time Maga
zine, has gone into Round 2. Round
1 was a draw, although the movies,
until the last few seconds, ex
pected easy victory.
. The movies’ initial claim of
first-round victory was based on
a virtual boycott by Hollywood
studios of Eugene F. McDonald,
{)r.’s Phonevision-——movies ordered
y telephone for home T. V.
screens at $1 each. McDonald,
glresident of Zenith Radio, came to
ollywood only to be denied the
use of new screen product for a
three-month test in Chicago this
fall,
McDonald left town in a huff
and there were - handshakes all
around the studio lots.
Then came a flash from Wash
ington—and the bell for the end
of Round 1. Television had come
up with a draw.
The Washington flash reported
the closing of 600 movie theaters
#n the last six months. All of the
¢losings were in cities with tele
vision, The largest number of
closings, 71, was from the Phila
gelphia area, where TV lis red
ot.
Coming up in the next eight
rounds will be slugging over big
screen TV, the dream of Spyros
Skouras; the studios’ contract with
the Musicians Union to keep musi
cal sound tracks off TV and the
decision over whether Hollywood
itself would make films for tele
vision despite the wails of theater
owners.
