National Revival

Spirit Begins
The nationar revivai of the In
dependence spirit and the recol

‘ ;htiap on a bronze bell in Philadel
a.
Secretary of the Treasury John
W, Synder stood in Independence
’Hall in Philadelphia on May 15,
a rubber-covered mallet in his
hand. After a short speech, cli
' maxing an hour-long four net
i work broadcast, the Secretary
gently tapped the hulk of copper
inext to him and the millions lis
tening heard the Liberty Bell
. whisper. '
That whisper has grown into a
shout and the voice of the Liber- |
ty Bell echoes throughout the
country with the stirring message,

| Visits Communities |
' Over two thousand communities “

I The bell that they will hear be

state and territory at the conclu

tary of the Treasury, John W.
Snyder. They will be loaned for
permanent display.
These exact copies of the Liber

jons of Americans have saved over
S4B billion dollars,
When the Treasury announced
in March that a Savings Bonds
Drive would be conducted with
the Liberty Bell as its symbol and
“Save for your Independence” as
its slogan, the copper industry vol
unteered an unprecedented sug
gestion,
They offered to have exact
copies of the Liberty Bell made to

easury accepted this generous
offer, and Arthur L. Bigelow, one
of America’s foremost bellmasters,*
volunteered his issistance in de
signing the duplicate bells.
Bigelow, a professor of engi
neerin% as well as bellmaster at
Princeton University, made an ex
haustive study of the Liberty Bell
in Philadelphia and a search for a
foundry to produce the bells began.
The United States lacked a bell
foundry of the type necessary to

Always A Step Ahead In Values
* ¢ TWYRSDAY, JUNE 15, 1950,
Vieux, Haute Savoie, France, with
the first shipment of thirteen bells
arriving April 21,
The little community was exci
ted about the project and poured
thie best of their craftsmanship and
art into the molds that formed the
Liberty Bells. They finished their
first thirteen bells on time, and
there was a warm welcome recep
tion in New Jersey when they ar
rived on April 21.
Bellmasters claim that these
bells, because of their exact sim
ilarity to the original, reproduce
perfectly the sound of the long
silent Liberty Bell.
On June 27, the citizens of Ath
ens will see their Liberty Bell,
They will hear its voice at spe
cial ceremonies which are being
arranged by the Savings Bonds
volunteer committees. Everyone is
in the new Bond Drive dedicated
to the furthering of every man’s
ideal of a financially independent
future.
Programs involving local digni
taries, celebrities, and the appear
ance of prominent business figures
are being planned by the commit
tee. The Liberty Bell replica will
tell the time during the appear
ance here. Citizens will be re
minded that it’s “Time to Save for
Independence” whenever they
hear the bell’s voice.
Don’t fail to see your Liberty
Bell. It’s your bell, and a wonder
ful reminder of American ideals
and American beliefs.
