educated pigeons.
They’re able to play a tune on a
piano, play table tennis, tell time,
push pushbuttons and understand
changing colors—like traffic lights.
The piano players can rattle off
such simple tunes as “Over the
Fence Is Out, Boys” and “Take
Me Out to the Ball Game.”

Conclusions Drawn

these conclusions after a series of
experiments.

How do you do it with pigeons?
' The professor explains that pl
‘geons are ideal subjects because
‘they have a reaction time compar
‘able to humans.
They are paid off with food if
’their responses to various tests
‘bring the desired results.
Dr, Skinner gets the piano play
ers to drum up a tune by reward
ing them if they peck the keys on
a seven key board in certain se
quences,
The modified table tennis—with
out nets—is played on a two-feet
square table.
One pigeon, using his beak, tries
to bat the ball past his opponent,
Rallies sometimes run to three or
four shots ~— though most are
“aces.” Each successful shot brings
a reward of food,
Another Experiment
In another experiment, the birds
are placed or: either side of a glass
partition. A panel has three but
tons on either side of the glass.
To receive food, both pigeons
must strike simultaneously certain
matching buttons in the separated
cages, When they turn the trick,
food pops out.
Other birds have learned to peck
signs labeled “yellow,” ‘“green,”
“blue,” and “red,’—always picking
the proper sign when a light of
the same color is flashed on. That
also brings a reward of grain.
The time tellers do it this way.
If an apparatus customarily pays
off 10 seconds after the signal,
they learn to kill that time by do

June is a big advice month. One
may advjse brides. One may ad
vise rose growers about pests. One
may advise poison ivy and su
burn sufferers. One may advise
on where to go on vacations and
how to deport oneself on same,
It is also the traditional month
for advice on how to get a job,
This, of course, is aimed at the
group with the bloom on the cheek,
career on the mind and sheep
skin in the hand.
My own personal thought is that
such advice should be reserved
until late August. Almost any
young .job hunter who has been
able to remain without a job
through eight or 12 years of edu=
cation certainly must be able to
win a few more months on the
family bankroll — long enough to
enjoy & final, carefree summer,
Fall is time enough to start the
rocky road of becoming a Success.

In seeking a job, one must ob
serve certain protocols. Experts
in job-hunting have been practic
ing for years, and theyalways tell
the new graduate specific things.
Many of them don’t make much
'sense, but apparently these out
‘ward symbols must be maintained
when one is storming the bastions
of business for the first time,
The first thing to consider is
appearance. Young men have it
pretty easy. They should have
their clothes pressed, their linen
(white) spotless and they should
sit up straight in a chair when be~
ing interviewed.
Girls are uniformly urged to go
easy on make-up. A slight dab of
lip-rouge is about all that is per
mitted, For some strange reason,
people who seek jobs with the
normal amount of make-up on
their faces are considered to be
showing a vacant mind.
It doesn’t seem to matter that
the prospective employer has a
wife who applies cosmetics with
a shovel. And after the job is once
safely in the hand, i’s all right to
go back to one’s usual make-up
habits. But for the initial inter
view, the pallid, slightly shiny
{ace is aumost a requirement. This
is important, for employers are
conditioned tg e):pegt it.
Don’'t wear earrings under any
conditions, or rings or brooches.
The experts usually throw in a
special admonition about pendant
earrings, although I haven’t seen
any of these since Theda Bara
made a personal appearance in our
town a couple of decades ago.
In this connection I might add
that among business women the
quality and quantity of jewelry
worn is as obvious a sign of rank
as the bars, leaves and stars seen
on Army officers’ shoulders. Once
the employee acquires a private
office, a secretary and a title, the
r‘TQutred symbols of success are a
plainly tailored but obviously ex-

Neophytes in the business world
are told mever to lie ab)ut their
experience, If you have had none,
they are told, s™¥ so, When you
say so, of course, the prospective
employer will smile with finality
and tell you to come back when
you've acquired some. I'm afraid
I can’t tell you how to acquire ex
perience in the eve:t you want to
‘eat at the same time. Maybe em-~
‘ployers will tolerate lack of epe
rience if you don’t use make-up
and eschew earrings, but the ex
perts are a little fuzzy on this
point. |
Another item is to have ready
a typewritten summary of your
qualifications. This will make it
easy for the prospective employer
to tell you he’ll look over your
summary and let you know about
the job in a few days. This is
known as the Easy Out, He'll like
you better if he has one. You
might even hear from him in a
few days.
€ ® »
This is the rough outline. If 1
were an expert, I'd just advise
the job hunter to exhaust every
known close business contact be
fore trying the cold outside world.
Fathers, cousins and uncles are
more apt to be sympathetic about
giving a youngster a job than any=
one else. And fathers are the very
best.
In the case of pretty young girls,
try to get an employer who is
young, single, handsome ard im
pressionable, There are some
things even better than becoming
a successful career woman,
The largest business firm in this
country in the early 1800 s was the

by John Jacob Astor, :

A pair of sunglasses doesn’t end
your summer responsibility to your
eyes. Increased hours in the open
mean they receive extra eéxposure
to sun glare, wind burn. and dust,
To keep your eyes looking and
feeling their best, special care is
necessary.
First rule ie to keep your hands
away from your eyes regardless of
how itchy or tired they feel, To
relieve this discomfort, it’s a good
idea to wash your eyes with a mild
boric acid solution, either using
an eye cup or simply squeezing a
few drops into them from a sterile
‘cotton ball moistened with the
boric water.
These cotton balls are also use
ful as eye brighteners. Saturated
with cold boric solution and placed
'as pads upon closed - lids they
'soothe and refresh your eyes. This
! is a good thing to remember if you
discover, when dressing for an im
portant evening, that your eyes are
work-reddened or dull looking.
There are also make-up tricks
you can use to enhance your eyes.
Take time often to lubricate the
fine skin around them. Since this
skin is thin and delicate, it shows
dryness and tends to wrinkle un-‘
less cared for. Baby oil is good for |
this. P
For that extra bit of evening‘
glamor, add these touches: Smooth |
your lids with baby oil or petrole
um jelly to accent their silken
look, and brush your lashes lightly
with powder before applying mas~
cara to make them appear thicker.
The wise woman, however, con=
cerns herself with the health of

hours at close work, and check
with your specialist at the first
signs of faulty vision or eye dis
ecomfort.
