Ilist of canine subjects that could
(be made available to commercial

' Over 100 dogs, representing most
of the breeds recognized by the
American Kennel Club, are already
vegistered with the agency. Each
“model” has & file card that shows
several poses of the subject and
lists such vital facts about him as
‘his sex, color, age, height, and spe

! Shaggy, a roguish Skye Terrier,
| for example, shows that her special
ty is standing on her hind legs.
" So far, the majority of requests
have been for models for fashion
pictures and magazine advertise
ments. No one breed is tops in
popularity but Poodles, which are
associated with elegant clothes, are
most in demand for fashion shots.
There ‘are seasonal variations, of
course. For out-of-door fall fashion
shots, sporting breeds such as
Pointers, Setters, and Beagles are
favored.

LOOK AT THAT NOISE! — This is an actual photo of sound
waves emitted from & horn, taken at Bell Telephone laboraiories
in New York., The wave pattern, oroduced during a time exposure
of sbout ten minutes, is made by a scanning technique somewhat
like that used in television. A tiny microphone and a 110-volt
neon lamp swing vertically through the sound-wave field, pro
~ ducing the pattern which is recorded by an acoustic lens.

L? SCHOOL GRAD—James C. Hornberger, Jr,, of Succasunna,
» spent five years in the Pacific war, and returned to grammar
at the age of 24. This year, he graduated from Roxbury
School at age 20. He's seen with two of his teachers who are
?a he is—Mrs. Adsline Taylor, left, and Mrs. Celeste
=Bdes. Hornberger, known as “Pop” to his schoclmates, is Beaded

shows. A television stage is small
and compact enough to permit the
trainer to stand just off stage, close
enough to give the dog commands.
Whereas the skin tone or texture
of 2 human performer may require
special makeup, a dog’s coat of hair
needs only a good brushing before
a TV appearance,
After he receives a request for
2 model, Hanks runs through his
file to select the dog best fitted for
the job. Then he telephones the
dog's owner and sets up an appoint
ment. Fees for canine models avers
age SSO per day but in the case
of a dog that must be specially
groomed, the agency charges as
much as $35 an hour. Breeds like
Bedlington Terriers and Poodles
usually require grooming, whereas
smooth haired dogs like Bostom
Terriers and Dachshunds may sime
ply be brushed.
Obedience training is almost a
flat “must” for Hanks' models.
Commercial photographers can’t af
ford to waste time chasing a play
ful pup around the studio. Photo
graphing a dog often takes from
one and a half to three hours of
hard work. Dogs can’t take more
than about 10 minutes of steadyl
posing without a break.
Hanks’ oddest request to date
came from an ad agency that need-.
ed a dog picture to illustrate a
manufacturer’s theme idea that
quantity doesn‘glnecessarily mean
sacrifice of quality. The agency
felt a female hunting dog with a
litter of about 15 pups would put
over the point neatly. After much
hectic phoning around town, how
ever, Hanks finally got them to
compromise on an Irish Setter with’
five pups.
