EUCLID THEOREM
BAGDAD— (AP) — A Baby
lonian scientist discovered one of
Euclid’s theorems some 1,700
vears before the father of geome
try was born, asserts .Taha Bagir,
curator of the Irapi Museum in
Baghdad. The “most ancient math
ematical ext known to date” was
deciphered recently from a cunei
form inseription carved on a 4,000
year old clay tablet, Baqir said in
an interview.
The tablet, along with several
others, was unearthed at Tal Har
mal, six miles south of Baghdad,
last fall. It dates back to the be
sinning of the First Dynasty of
Babylon, around 2,000 B. C., to
ward the end of the Sumerian era.
“The 'Tel Harmal tablet, it has
peen found, outlines one of the
basic theorems of geometry — an
application of the principle of sim
ilarity of the two right-angled tri
angles obtained in drawing a per
nendicular on the hypotenuse of
a right-angled triangle,” said
Bagir.

In one quarter, dogs seem to
have the edge on human beings.
That is in the field of life expect
ancy. Because of life prolonging
drugs and techniques, the life span
of dogs has been extended nearly
40 percent compared with that of
humans which has been extended
only 20 percent.
Dr. G. B. Schnelle of the Boston
Angell Memorial Hospital, largest
small-animal hospital on earth, an
nounced at a recent veterinarians'
meeting in Rensselaer, N, Y., that
the life of dogs has grown from an
average of 10 years to 14. Many
city dogs live as long as 17 years.
City dogs outlive country dogs for
the same reason that city folk out.
live their country cousins: better
care.
According to Dr. Schnelle, dogs
benefit more widely than humans
by medical advances—such as peni
cillin and surgical discoveries—be
caugse (1) sick dogs can't refuse
proper treatment, and (2) dog own
ers take better care of their pets
than of themselves.
An obituary notice from Liberty,

canine longevity. Duke was a Collie
