Isolating Polio Victims May
Ward Off General Epidemic
By EDWIN P. JORDON, M. D.
Written for NEA Service
Although there is much still to
learn concerning polio, the cause
is now known to be a virus, which
is & tiny living organism too small
to see under the ordinary mi
croscope. This wirus is difficult
to grow outside the human body,
but it has been possible to study
it in monkeys and in a few other
experimental animals.
Cpnsequently, it is now known
that there are at least two kinds
of polio viruses and possibly this
is the reason why second attacks
of the disease have been reported
once in a while.
How is this virus spread? Prob
ably it is from fairly close contact
between someone harboring the
virus and a susceptible person. The
virus has been found in waters
contaminated by human waste and
. on flies, but it is likely that human
tinfections are usually contracted
'by fairly close contact.
It is believed, too, that the incu

bation period—that is the time
between the exposure to the virus
and the development of symptoms
—is between one and two weeks.
It is also believed that most peo
ple who have not had polio are
susceptible to the virus and that
children from 1 to 16 years of age
are as a group more susceptible
than older people, although polio
also attacks older people occasion
ally.
What we know now is the re
sult of painstaking research and
there is every reason to expect
that investigations of the future
will continue to hack away at the
problem until it becomes solved.
This research is now being con
ducted in many parts of .he world
and is being supported in the
United States very largely by the
National Foundation for Infantile
Paralysis which so many citizens
support in the annual March of
Dimes Campaign.
Since there is no known way of
preventing polio, what precautions
J. SWANTON IVY, INC. 154 W. Hanceck Ave.
can be used? Early diagnosis is,
of course, particularly helpful.
At present it is recommended
that polio patients be isolated, that
is, kept away from others—for one
week from the beginning of their
illness or from the end of fever.
The secretions from the nose and
throat and intestinal discharges
l contain the virus and should there
fore be disposed of as quickly and
las safely as possible.
General Control
Other than these measures the
general opinion is that about all
that can be done is to take certain
steps in general control such as to
be aware of unusual outbreaks of
polio, to isolate children who have
fever until the diagnosis of its
cause has been found, to keep
children away from unnecessary
contacts such as crowds or movies,
to avoid excessive physical exer
cise and to postpone any but ur
gent operations around the nose,
throat or mouth.
These preventive measures do
not need to be taken, however,
except in those areas in which
there is an unusual amount of
| polio; parents should not feel that
| they must restrict the activities of
| their children all summer unless
! there is a more than average
i amount of infantile paralysis in
| the community.

Free Spectacies
Where did I put my Spects?
If you lived in England, the an
swer would probably be that you
left them on a train, a bus, or the
“underground,” the Better Vision
Institute conjectures. At all
events, recent statistics show that
the British are losing - their
spectacles on public conveyances
at an alarming rate.
In 1948, only 9,582 pairs of
spectacles were lost by careless
London travelers. Last year the
number rose to 12,094, an increase
of 26.2 per cent. In the interval,
there had been inaugurated the
national health service, providing
“free” spectacles for everybody
with refractive errors.
It seems a likely guess that the
Britishers are growing careless
with their glasses because they
ostensibly get them for nothing—
although the increased losses may
also be due to the fact that more
people are wearing glasses, now
that they are ‘“‘free.” In any case,
the Ministry of Health warns that
people who lose their spectacles
through carelessness will have to
pay for the next pair,
The National Safety council
says there are more accidental
deaths on U. S. farms than in any
other major industry.
