[ ;. FIRE
&IEF
: says:
- BY CHIEF W, C, THOMPSON
Not long ago the National Fire
Protection Association mrade a
study of all the fires that had been
reported to it during a recent 15-
year period. One part of the study
involved analysis of loss of life by
fire. All in all, the figures make
pretty grim reading, even for a
professional fire fighter.
Of the 18,592 fatalities reported,
more than a third occurred in
dwellings. There were 3,917 deaths
by fire in rural dwellings and 3,082
in city dwellings. In other words,
“home, sweet home” can be a
pretty dangerous fire trap, if you
are not careful,
Let’s take another look at those
home fatalities. More than half of
them were children, youngsters
who can be regarded as brutally
murdered by carelessness, neglect,
lack of adequate training in fire
safety and exposure to conditions
that breed fire—and death. The
records show, for example, that
during the 15-year period in ques~
tion 473 children were killed in
fires that broke out while they
were alone in the house. And re
member that the records studied
by the N. F. P. A. represent only
agout 10 percent of all the fires
and fatalities that occurred during
the survey period. That means that
approximately 4,700 boys and girls
lost their lives because they were
trapped by fire while they were
alone.
Statistics like these are nauseat
ing. For at least nine out of ten
fires involving loss of life to both
adults and children can be pre
vented or can be controlled with
negligible damage. But fire safety,
like a lot of other virtues, has to
begin at home, Every family
should have a well-thought out
plan for action in case of fire.
Every family should install ade
quate fire protection equipment—
and know how to use it. And
every family, no matter how fire
conscious’its adults may be, should
use an extra measure of common
sense when it comes to safeguard
ing its children from fire hazards,
How about your family?

IN YUGOSLAVIA
PITTSBURGH — (AP) —Du
quesne University’s Tamburitz

The U. S. Army invited the
group to present programs before
