DISCARDED “CAKE"
Medieval bakers had no baking
tins. To prevent bread from
scorching, they spread a coarse
dough over the floor of the oven
and placed the white dough upon
this, The coarse dough was simi
lar to our brown bread, but they
called it cake and discarded it
after the white bread was done,
In Germany, cockroaches are
called the “Russian bug,” and in
Russia, they are called the “Ger
man bug.”

Shelton assured me he would
listen to my side of the story when
Ifinally reached him by phone
and I had given him directions to
the Wee Spot, warning him to
watch for a tail.
It was nearly 10 when Shelton
showed™ up. We walked in casu
ally. I greeted him as an old
friend and we used one of the four
booths. I fed the juke box the last
of my nickels. I was that broke.
Sure, I had four SI,OOO bills.in my
pocket, but they were of no more
value to me than confetti.
I saw Shelton’s eyes narrow as
he thought about my bruise. I
could read his mind—ll must have
gotten that when old MeGregor
fought back as I killed him.
THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
I told him about the full allow
ance of Sammy Berend’s $300,000
worth of claims, about Sammy’s
girl Wendy Hillyer and the sharp
heel of her slipper. I could see
the incredulity in Shelton’s eyes
as I related the latter.
“I -know you're thinking, Shel
lie, that a guy who's been in as
many jams as I have and handled
as many hoods, wouldn’t fall for
an old gag like a drink in the
face with a heel on top. Well, it’s
the old ones that get you, Shellie.
That gal was greased lightening.
It would be intteresting to know
about her. She’s the one who
phoned Keever, all right, and she’s
Sammy Berend’s girl!”
He eyed me steadily, then blunt
ly said: “I’d like to believe you
Ben. But you wouldn’t be #he first
honest cop that’s got fed up with
being honest and gone wrong. I
still like you and regard you as a
friend and will continue to do so
even if they nail you for this. I
wouldn’t have risked losing my
job to come out here on the sly
if that hadn’t been so.
“But I'm also an adult with the
qualifying I.Q. And this thing
looks awfully funny to me. About
the funnicst is -your story of 2
red-headed girl named Wendy
Hillyer whom nobody’s ever seen
with Sammy Berend. Sammy gets
around. He’s got a girl that he
keeps in fur coats and diamond
bracelets, but her hair isn’'t red,
it’s blonde.”
“I know that, but there are few
blondes I wouldn’t throw over for
that redhead. Fortunately, you
can check on her. I even remem
ber her address from her driver’s
license. The moment she opens
her mouth, even Keever will real
ize she’s the girl who made the
anonymous phone call. From there
on, she should be made to talk
plenty. That’s what I want you to
do, Shellie; put Keever on her
trail and get the story out of her.”
“Why would somebody have a
girl phone McGregor and instruct
him to send you five SIOOO bills—
unless you were that somebody?”
I shook my head. !
Shelton was eying me with blunt
frankness. He was still my pal,
but he wasn’t blinding himself to
what his mind told him made
sense. He rubbed the back of his

“rd hate to find conclusive
proof that you put the slug on me,
Ben. But if I ever do, we'll really
have a battle—that’s a promise.”
“Tell me what happened, Shel
fie.”
“Well, I sat around about an
hour. Then I heard a movement
in the house and wondered if old
McGregor had got downstairs
some way. So I walked like a fool
through the doorway and got it
from somebody standing at the
side. ‘~
“T didn’t fall down through a
murky pit the way the guys do in
the books—l just woke up later
with a headache. Then I went
upstairs and found MecGregor, still
in his chair, slouched over on his
right side. He’s been shot through
the face, right at the bridge of his
noose.”
“Powder marks?”
“No not even a cartridge case
lying around, and I took for
granted it had been done with a
revolver, which turned out to be
a fact. A .32. The slug hadn’t
gone through the back. I started
to reach for the extension phone
in the window sill to call Keever
then got better sense and went
downstairs and made the call.
When the sheriff and his gang
came out with Keever I had to
tell the truth about McGregor's
threat. By that time Sylvia Mc-
Gregor and Lew Jeris had got
back.”
“Quite a blow to the girl, I sup~
pose.”
Shelton grimaced. “Not bad
as you might think. Neither she
nor Jeris had been able to scrape
up more than a couple of thou
sand bail. And they’d both gone
separate trails, trying all of Mec
- Gregor’s friends and meeting just
before they drove back. Sylvia
was so downhearted that she
seemed to take her father’s death
with something like a feeling of
relief. Maybe the old boy is bet-
