damp cloth is a Jaundry-saver in homes with children.
| BY GAILE DUGAS
NEA Staff Writer
NEW YORK.—(NEA )—During
the hot summer months, few
homemakers want to be bothered
with laundering slip covers, cur
tains or frilly dressing table skirts.
One way out lies in fabrics of the
vinyl plastie group.
~ These fabries, which wipe clean
with a damp cloth, come in weights
and textures, either backed or un
‘backed, which closely resemble
leather, lace, delicate eyelet em
;hroidery, uphelstery fabric and
drapery material. They are made
in a film sheer as voile and in
fabries which have the look of
linen or chintz and come in a wide
variety of patterns.
. -These plastic mraterials present
no difficulties to the home sewer.
'The only points you need to re
member in ruaming wp your own
summer curtaing and eouch cov
ers are that you must put a long
stitch on the machine, a drop of
oil on the needle, and use a size
50 or 60 thread.
. For draperies in the 90-inch
!lenc_th you'll need 7% yards of
opaque film in the 44-inch width.
A dressing table skirt takes five
‘yards of the eyelet material 36
inches wide. Fo- a studio couch
cover, youll need nine yards of
the 38~-inch width and 12 yards of
cording. The amount of material

for the studio couch depends, too, |
on the style of cover you choose. |
For short draperies, you'll need
approximately two yards of fabric
per window. ’
Waterproof and dust-shedding,
these materials are non-inflammra- |
ble, according to the makers, and |
are highly resistant to mildew, |
stains and strong sunlight. ‘
