Washington Departments Can't
Agree On Name For Korean War
WASHINGTON - (NEA — The
Korean affair hasn’t rescued the
pentagon experts from the grim
realities of bureaucracy. Latest is
2 cold-blooded rhubarb over what
+he official title should be for the
Korean business.
White House has said it’s not a
war, so that word is out in any
official references. State Dept. is
irying to get it labeled “Peace Ac-
Hion® Pentagon boys don’t like
that handle. Army intelligence re
ports call it “Situation in Korea.”
Other official reports refer to it as
“Korean Incident.”
“It"1l be up to Gen. MacArthur
to give it a name that sticks. Mean
while, cynical observers around
+the Pentagon are simply referring
io it as World War 11-A.
Pentagen Parking Problem
Other notes from a Pentagon
war eorrespondent:
One Dept. of Defense official
cays the Korean crisis is nothing
compared to the crisis which has
arisen over providing parking
spaces for the additional newsmen
who are now covering the Penta-
On. i
’ Biggest mystery is why the
Navy's public relations office was
so slow and timid in reporting
naval activity in current affair. At
the daily briefings the Navy
spokesmen apparently didn’t know
as much about what was going on
as appeared in the papers. What
the ISavy has done and how quick
ly it got into action is a good,
dram}gg story. What the Navy is
sitting on it for is the big ques
tion.
Since the Korean outbreak the
Army has had more than 1000 ap
plications from newsmen for of
ficial accreditation to the Dept. of
Defense.
There are stand-by plans to
slap wartime security measures
back on the Pentagon. During
working days anybody can get in
without a pass. Only off-hours do
you need a pass for admittance.
Emergency plan would make a
pass necessary all the time.
No Red Aerial A-Bomb?
An increasing number of mili
tary experts are claiming flatly
that ‘Russia does not have an
atomie bomb which could be
dropped from an airplane. They
admit that the Reds have pro
duced some test atomic explosions.
But they say they do not have the
complicated, precision instruments
necessary for detonating an aerial
A-bomb. s
Republican May Move Up
They're predicting that Secre
tary of Defense Johnson will use
the Kofean emergency as an ex
cuse for putting ‘his Republican
crony, -Paul Griffith, in the job
of Deputy Secretary of Defense
when it is'vacated by Steve Early,
Griffith is now assistant secretary.

At Sea About Lost Mines
Sea mines, planted by the U. S.
around Korean waters and around
Formosa during World War 11, are
the biggest hazard to Navy opera
tions in those areas today. They
have drifted since being planted
and nobody knows where they
are. It's practically impossible to
sweep them by ordinary methods.
Not anticipating the need for de
tonating our own mines, a method
for doing it safely was overlooked
when the mines were developed.
They've been paying fabulous
wages to civilian crews who man
ships which deliberately sail over
the lost mines to set them off.
The crews wear football helmets
and are heavily padded to protect
them from the underwater blasts.
Surplus cargo ships are being used
in this ticklish business. In spite
of the big pay, it’s plenty hard to
get volunteers for the job.
U. 8. Fliers Are ‘Old Timers’
More than half of the pilots in
Japan who are flying sorties
against the North Korean forces
are veterans of World War II

siderably higher than the mini~

bat operations, :
You Gotta Pay the Mortgage
Veterans Administration offi
cials' are worried about the great
boom in house-buying by veterans
which has been caused by the lib
eral financing provisions of the
new U. S, housing act. They are
launching a campaign of education
aimed at making vets more cau
tious about buying. The danger
ous lure, they say, is the fact that
a veteran can buy a house with
practically nothing down, with
monthly payments which are less
than the rent he has been paying.
VA is pointing out that “first
and foremost "(a veteran) must
realize that he is obtaining ‘a loan
which must be repaid.” It warns
that in addition to monthly pay
ments of interest and principal, it
is wecessary for home owners to
pay reael estate taxes and insur
ance; for repairs and utilities. And
it is urging that all veterans make
sure they understand all of the
provisions of the sales contract
they have to sign.
It’'s Come to This: Kids
Like School
- In the annual report of the Na
tional Education Association, Wil
liard W. Givens, executive secre
tary, warns that there are other
important factors besides an in
creased birth rate which tend to
aggravate the present shortage of
school buildings and teachers dur
ing the coming years.
Among theni he lists population
shifts, longer:school terms, aboli-
tion of child labor and more effi
cient enforcement of compulsory
attendance laws, Another big fac
tor he calls “the holding power of
schools.” More kids are staying in
school to finish high school than
ever before.
Of 1000 pupils in the fifth grade
in 1906-1907, only 139 were grad
uated from high school in 1914; of
1000 in the fifth grade in 1934-35,
467 received their high school dip
lomas in 1942.

SEX FILMS
BLANKET SINGAPORE
" SINGAPORE—(AP)—The mys
terlous ways of the Singapore
film censor yield strange fruit.
The most recent was an orgy of
sexology films in every major
movie house in this British colony
and all at the same time.
Storm center for several years
over his someumes unexpected
decisions, Censor Jack Evans ban
ned a series of sex films. The
colony Appeal Board, which has
final say in what films can be
shown, overruled him as it has
many times 1n the past. There was
such attendant publicity, however,
that all the big houses decided to
cash in. As a result, for a week
it was impossible to see any film
that wasn’t carrying such adver=
tisements as “Don’t Keep the Facts
of Life a Secret,™ "Sincere and
Frank Attempt at Sex Education,”
and, of course, “Children under 14
not admitted.”
ARAB LOOTERS
ISRAELIS ACCUSE
BEERSHEBA, Israel — (AP) —
Arab infiltrators from the Egypt
ian-held Gaza strip are continuing
to cross into Israeli territory de
spite a strengthening of frontier
forces, In a single week-end,
Israeli patrols eaptured 68 Arabs
in a series of clashes between here
and the Gaza strip. Two Arabs
were wounded. One donkey was
killed.
Israeli authorities claim most of
the Arabs seek to enter Israel for
“murder and looting.” Many Jew=-
ish farms are raided almost night=
ly. Marauders make off with cat
tle and farm supplies and kill or
wound Jewish defenders. Arabs
also often try to run convoys from
Gaza througn rsrael to Joraan ter
ritory.
