SWIMTOBEAUTY, SAYS ALICIA
HART: SPLASH WORRIES AWAY
BY ALICIA HART
NEA Staff Writer
Swimming’s one sport that’s not
restricted to the experts.
Even if dunking dog-paddling is
the limit of your skill, your time
i 1 the water can be as healthful,
happy and beautifying as that of
the girl with the perfect stroke.
Not only is swimming fun, but it
is a pleasant and effective way to
exercise. In as short a period as
a two-week’s vacation your can, by
applying yourself to swimming
and water play, slim down your
bulges and improve your muscle
tone.
Since the water is buoyant, it
supports much of the weight of

Major brains are producing one
time—and muscle-saver after an
other, There must be some who
could give a little attention to a
few which haven't been changed
for too long.
My own list of items which need
‘mmediate, concentrated attention
is short: handbags.
It is my personal estimate, bas
ol on my own activities, that more
‘me is lost weekly by women try
¢ to find something in the bot
torm of a handbag, than is saved in
~ year by all scheduled airlines in
the country.
Handbags haven’t changed much
since Adam stitched up a leather
carry-all for his Eve. Some time
back, they added linings with
pockets for comb and mirror, but
the inside of a handbag is still the
inside of a handbag. Sometimes it
seems that the people who design
handbags know nothing at all
about what people put in hand
bags.
In the first place, no one has
ever made a handbag of the right
size: they are all too small or much
too large.
I suppose that there are fashion
experts who try to give the im
pression that women change hand-

beauty improvement you're seek

The flutter kick is an old stand
by for melting down excess pound
age on hips or thighs. It works
equally well as a part of your
swimming stroke or as a concen
strated side of the pool exercise. At
the beach or in mid-pool a ball or
life preserver can be used to pro
vide support.
Although a shallow splashy flut
ter is fun, a submerged kick
should be used for serious slim
ming. This is more difficult, but it
is also more effective.
To provide a good workout for
all your unused leg and foot mus
cles, vary this exercise by turning
first on your stomach and then on
bags to match the rest of their
costume. I am in a position to say
that most of us will do anything
—including changing our complete
costume — to avoid the nasty job
of switching our essential equip
ment from one handbag to another.
One of the reasons is that it is a
dusty, grimy job, particularly as
one approaches the bottom of the
handbag, where lies a strata of
dried tobacco, empty cigarette pa-.
pers, odd pennies and nickels,
stamps torn from misaddressed
letters, snipets of papers bearing
smudged and illegible telephone
numbers and names of forgotten
people.
There are always at least three
lipsticks, a compact, a wallet a
bunch of letters you meant to ans
wer — and switching purses re
minds you that you didn't do it—
odd papers, like a last winter's
timetable and slips from ancient
bank deposits, a key ring or two,
an address book with few, if any,
addresses in it, up to 20 pencils
with no peints and at least two
dry fountain pens. Old dusty
cleansing tissues,.a grubby hand
kerchief or two, probably some
soiled white cotton gloves, a book
of three-cent -stamps, at least a
dozen calling or business cards, a
driving license. Frequently this is
supplemented by mascara, eye
brow pencil, checkbook, reading
glasses, sun glasses, cigarette case,
lighter, 10 packgges }_)f. matche‘s‘.
Obviously all this routine
equipment cannot be carried in
a small handbag. There is nothing
so utterly heartbreaking as a wo
man who has purchased a hand
some small bag, and finds she can
stuff nothing in it beyond the
barest essentials — and even then
maybe has to leave her reading
glasses at home. When a small
handbag is ready for action, it is so
close-packed, that finding any
thing requires a complete repack
ing job. Taxi-drivers, waiting for
their fares, become very impatient
about this. Ll
Of course, you can get all of the
stuff into a big hand-bag. (a friend
of mine pulled out a pair of long
nosed pliers from her handbag tne
other day and not only didn’t
know where they came from but
didn’t know what thegiswere). The
point about the big bags is that
it takes up to an houyr to find any
object. Women have been kngwn to
come perilously close to nervous
breakdowns fumbling around in
the vast, cluttered interioc of ca
pacious handbags looking for a
i change-purse.
. Seon we will also take up seme
other crying needs of civilization:
something to keep people from
forgetting to turn off the cellar
light; automobile glove compart
ment which holds gloves and mnot
torn maps, bits of candy bars and
odd washers and screws that don’t
fit anything, and self-balancing
check-books. But first, let’s solve
the handbag problem.

of your energy to the health or
your back.
The breast stroke may be used
to mold your arms into new shape
liness and to develop the pectorial
muscles that support your bosom.
This movement serves not only the
girl who streaks through the water
‘in seconds flat, but the non-swim
‘mer as well. By wading out into
chest-deep water, you can propel
your arms through the same stroke
and derive the same benefits, pro
vided you put real force into the
motion.
By leaping the waves as they
roll up the beach, or by simply
jumping up and down in the shal
low end of the pool, you can
strengthen the muscles in your
calf. After such a toning up you
can return after vacation to your
regular duties with spring in your
walk and renewed confidence in
your appearance,

“I am greatly pleased with

When a loss occurs, it gives
us pleasure to have the op

ability as insurance counsel

If people realized that the
value of insurance depends
upon the selection of the prop

in which the policies are writ

a competent agent in their
own community to handle
their insurance affairs.
Remember that you have
