Sex Education
Should Begin
Early-Doctor
Speaking before 50 nurses,
school teachers, coaches and civic |
leaders last week at the University
of Georgia health workshop, Dr.
Samuel Robbins of the American
Social Hygiene Association said
sex education for the child should
bigin before grammar school.
Children begin playing with
qther children at an age of two or
ttiree, said the doctor. “It is only®
n%tural that they should be curious
about the two sexes. It is only nat
ural that they should wonder
‘why’,” Dr. Robbins explained. If
the parent doesn't give satisfac
tory answers to the child’s ques
tions, he will find out from
“chance” sources, the well-known
authority pointed out.
“It is up to the parents to lay a
foundation in sex education before
the child enters the first grade,”
Dr. Robbins stressed. “There seems
to be little doubt that the child
gets respect for she opposite sex
by understanding it.”
Combining sex educafion with
-family life, Dr. Robbins said one
of the biggest problems which
arises in the home is the hate de
‘veloped by an older child for a
‘baby dister or brother. “This is
certainly understandable,” he ex
\ plained, “if the older child is com
‘pletely ignored after a new baby
comes along. Great pains must be
takeX to make the older child feel
as though he is a partner. Let him
help in the care of the baby. He
will feel that the baby is his, too,
and he will love the infant.”
The most important shge fac
tor in happy family life, Rob
bins emphasized, is love. “If we
will lose ourselves, and think of
others, our famfly life will be
most successful. To love within
the family is thg surest way of
‘reaching God,” he said. “Too many
of us go to church on Sunday to
pray, and then prey on man for
remainder of the week.”
The workshop is under the di
rection of the University in coop
eration with the State Health De
partment.
SATURDAY IS BAD
IN LONDON TRAFFIC
LONDON —(AP)— Saturday is
the week’s worst day for traffic
accidents in Greater London. Fri
day is worst for pedestrians and
Monday for cyclists. . This is
brought out in a report of Sir
Harold Scott, police commissioner,
on the 28,276 accidents that hap
pened last year on the streets and
roads of the 734-square-milk me
tropolitan police district.
Five hundred sixty five people
were killed — 38 more than the
year before—and 32,319 hurt. The
dog, often said to be man’s b&st
friend, was held wholly or partly
to blame for 474 of the casualties.
DEATH IN A EO&BCUS
COPENHAGEN—(AP)—AII ar
tists in a small Danish circus sud
denly died. That happened dur
ing the heat wave recently, and all
performances have been cancelled
till new artists have baen trained!
However it is terribly difficult to
replace the artists—3o fleas—as
not many people will admit they
possess such animals.
