Betfer Tobacco Prices s Outlook
Before Opening Of Auction Season
VALDOSTA, Ga.,, July 15 —
(AP)—Better prices, but less to
bacco was the outlook today, just
one week before the opening of
the 1950 auction season,
Unfavorable weather has cut
the amount of tobacco grown on
the Georgia-Florida flue cured
belt this season. e
The government estimated the
Georgia crop at 97,000,000 pounds,
comfiared with 114,540,000 pounds
marketed last year. Total produc
tion in the belt is estimated at
117,270,000 pounds, compared
with 135,163,000 pounds in 1949.
But the government has set a
g_lighu' support price this year.
1e average support price is $45
a hundred ;{ounds, $2:50 a hun
dred above last year’s figures. If
the growers are dissatisfied with
the prices fiaid at the auctions,
they can place their tobacco -in
government loans.
Auction of this year’s tobacco
starts July 24 in the 19 Georgia
and three Florida centers. Grow
ers had asked an earlier opening,
but their request was denied.
Now there is a move to get the
closing date extended beyond the
August 18 scheduled end.
The smaller crop, an improved
export market, the higher loan
rate, and the usual grood demand
for flue cured tobacco brought
predictions of higher prices.
Curing of the tobacco was well
ahead of schedule in the belt until
rain this month. Frequent showers
have slowed the cutting of leaves
in the field, and mold has set in
in many crops.
The usual round of tobacco fes-

ATOMIC RISKS DENIED
MELBOURNE—(AP)—The love
life of atomic scientists is no more
risky — medically speaking — than
that of other workers, says Dr. C.
E. Eddy.
Dr. Eddy, director of the Com
monwealth X-ray and -radius lab
oratories, said working in a job
involving exposure to the known
risks of radioactive materials is
no more dangerous than walking
across a street. He was comment
ing on a warning by a British
medical journal that men and wo
men scientists working in British
atom plants should not marry each
other.
HEN DIDN'T LAY
GOLDEN EGGS
MELBOURNE— (AP) —A Mel
bourne hen might have laid a gol
den egg — if it hadn’t been dead.
This very dead gold-bearing hen
showed up in a delicatessen shop.
When it was being cleaned, 50
pieces of gold-bearing quartz, each
the size of half a pea, were found
in its inside. Now the question is:
Where did the hen come from?
Nobody knows. It was one of a
number bought at a city fowl auc
tion. The auctioneer sells fowl
from all over Victoria.

don’t know much about that,
“‘ldo know how well my bankes

this once, and he said straight out
that the only way banks make
money is by helping their cus

that’s a pretty good deal for both
of us. I'd have a tough time grow
ing cotton withomt that kind of
banking.”
