té ¥ How to Hold a Pet Show
,V}‘,!'(‘Mvvny TOM FARLEY <mim s
{ONE of the best ways to teach
| childrén how to careé for pets
s through the organization of am
ateur pet shows. These should be
neighborhood affairs in which every
pooch and kitten that has a loving
owner can compete. And they can
! be sponsored by any group of
ildults that is ilnterested —the
ilchool. church, civie club, news
paper, or department store. All
| kinds of pets can be entered—every
thing from cats, rabbits, guinea
pigs and ducks to tropical fish and
turties. But dogs are better fitted
! for pet shows than any other kind
of animal, and usually make up
the major part of the entrance list.
| Outdoor’ shows should be held
during the warmer part of the
| year, but not in the very hot
months. Indoor shows can be held
" at any time. No+ animal should
be entered that is not truly the
pet of the entrant. Children some
| times borrow pets just for entry,
' which defedats the character-build
ing purpose for which the show
,was designed. Parent’s signature
on the entry blank stating the pet
has been owned not less than two
months solves this problem.
Doge should be brought in
jeashed. They should be tied far
enough apart to prevent contact.
| Unfriendly dogs should be muz
~zled, and puppies less than 8 weeks
old should be barred entirely. Each
"dog should have a receptacle of
'clean water, and sawdust or shav
ings spread on an indoor floor
- make & good carpet to absorb mois
| ture, Owners only should touch
| their dog and unlicensed dogs

The number of classes set up.
should be numerous enough to let
all kids have a chance to win. Cat
egories for dogs might include: the
best long-haired dog; handsomest
dog; homeliest dog; dog with long
est or shortest tail; best all-around
dog owned by boy or girl, most
obedient dog; dog with most spots.
To be sure there is real competi
tion, no dog should be entered in
more than two classes.
Three is usually a desirable
number of judges. These should
be adults who know something
about animals. Awarding should
be done in a show-ring where all
'spectators can see the animals
without pushing and shoving. And
the judges should give aloud their
reasons for making an award. Ani
mals in poor physical condition or
which appear to have been mal
treated should receive no award at
all. Otherwise children are en
couraged if each receives some
kind of prize, even though it is
no more than a mentioning of
merit. Bach class can have a first
award, or blue ribbon, a second
award, or red ribbon, and as many
merit awards, or yellow ribbons &s
there are animals in a class.
Talks, demonstrations of dog
training and dog care, motion pic
tures, and other programs can be
arranged in connection with the
show to whip up interest in pets.
Children should be ‘encouraged to
make posters tc decorate the show
and can help in setting up the
ring and in decorating the regis
tration tables with crepe paper. |
