[arge enions grown from sets are ready to harvest in midsummer.
When onion tops grow limp and
+.nple over, it is time to harvest
<he bulbe, This harvest may be ex-
Locted in midsummer, if sets were
lanted in early spring. The bulbs
1 ced not be dug at once, but when
Ihey are lifted, let them dry in the
<un several days then store in a
drv, well ventilated place.
Onion plants that develop a seed
< alk, with a ball-shaped seed pod
2t the top, will not make satisfac
-loy bulbs, but should be pulled up
- soon as noticed, and used for
en onlons. It is the larger onion
that bear seeds, and the small

i ns.
cse early onions will keep well
q ¢ the summer and fall; and
- mild flavor will be welcome
. alads, in the period when green

- -= of tieing their tops together and
banging strings of onions in the
basement, or dropping them from
gorege rafters, |
since onion sets are not usually |

CREDIT PICTURE WORRIES WASHINGTON—FederaI eco
nomig experts look with considerable concern on the steadily rising
curve of consumer credit. Many see it as an inflationary prelude
to an economic bust. Graph shows how private debt has risen from
less than $8,000,000,000 at the end of prewar 1939 to nearly
$19,000,000,000 in the first half of 1950, However, the important
facior is not the total deb% but how much of income it represents.
Actually, the ratio of debt to income for 1939 was 36.5 per cent
while 1950’s is only 29.9 per cent because Joe Doake’s income
these days is so much higher than it was ir 1939.-

Slopping car,” designed by Helmut Butenuth, German automobile

available for midsummer planting,
for green onions in the fall we
must depend upon seeds sown in
June, Seed of the variety white
Lisbon, a bunching onion, may be
sown in drills 2 inches deep, 12 to
18 inches apart, taking the precau
tions usual for summer sowing. Sow
the seed thinly and begin *o pull
up onions as soon as they are large
enough to use in salads. If soil is
hilled around them as they grow,
the length of white stalk will be
increased. There is no reason why
the green portion of an onion
should not be eaten, however.
The onion is not one of the vita
min-rich vegetables, but its flavor
makes it indispensable. Such vita
min content as it has is in the green
stalk and leaves, which can be cut
up and mixed with a tossed salad
to impart the appetizing flavor.
A rich soil is required to grow
onions from seed. A balanced plant
food should be applied at the rate
of a pint to 25 feet of row, before
sowing.
