Meadows Predicts Industrial
Growth In Northeast Georgia
Dr. J. C. Meadows of the Uni
versity of Georgia told the Athens
Exchange Club at its meeting
held this week at the Georgian
Hotel that Northeast Georgia
should experience a gradual in
dustrial growth. He declared that
the tendency .in Georgia is for in
dustry to build small plants and
locata fn small communities.
Diseussing 1950 census. figures,
Dr. Meadows said:, ;
“While there is considerable in
dustry in Northeast- Georgia the
industry of Georgia is concentra

state, Northeast Georgia being

The census shows that there
has been a movement from rural
to urban areas, it being the rural
farm people who are migrating
most,
"Sev%‘al of the counties in this
regiom have a large negro popu
lation, especially the counties of
Greene, Oglethorpe, and Wilkes.
In all of the sixteen counties in
this part of the State the wood
land eomprises more than half
of the area of the county with the
single exception of Hart; the
woodland comprises eighty per
cent of Hall county.”
“The lack of a North-South
trunk Hne railroad and the lack
of main North-South highways to
bring a large tourist trade,” were
claimed.

dren, Dr. Meadows said.
Dr. Meadows doubted that
Georgia would lose a con
gressman when the final census
figures are announced. He thought
that the shift of U. S. representa
tives would be made from the
four states which had a decline in
population and from the other
states which had a smaller in
crease in growth than Georgia.
Dr. Meadows stated that only
four counties (Barrow, Clarke,
Gwinnett, and Hall of the sixteen
counties in this area showed a
gain in population on the 1950
census. .
The speaker stated that the gain
in Barrow county was only about
150 persons; that the gain in
Clarke county was largely due to

The Danielsville and Comer
Telephone Company was organized
by Mr. Birchmore’s father, the late
W. C. Bichmore, the Charter is
dated 1899. The first line was from
Mr. Birchmore’s store at Comer to
L. E. Green’s store at Danielsville.
The line was a one line ground
system attached to post-oak post,
and was quite a convenience in its’
day. The present system is of the‘
magneto type and the new system
will be automatic dial. |
L. E. Greene of Danijelsville is:
the only living original stockhold
er of the company. Among the

wvullsions or fits. In epilepsy these
electrical waves are different from '
those of the normal. 4
There are two main kinds of
true epilepsy. The less seri9usi
kind is called petit mal, in which
there is a brief loss of conscious~.
ness without convulsions. The se
vere type is called grand mal, in
which there is a mental “black
out” associated with typical con
vulsions. . I
Before an attack there is usual- |
ly a peculiar sensation in somel
part of the body. This is known as |
an aura. The sensation is hard to
describe but an “uneasy feeling”
in the stomach area is one of the
most common. Those who have’
epileptic attacks learn to recognize
W
this aura and te know that an at
tack is on the way.
At the beginning of a major at
tack, the patient may give a loud
scream or yell, which is called an
epileptic cry. When an attack first
begins the head is usually drawn
back or to one side, the jaws are
fixed, the hands clenched and the
legs extended straight out. This is
quickly followed by muscular con~
tractions, noisy breathing, and a
brick-red colored face. During all
this period from the epileptic cry
on, the patient is unconseious.
Attacks Can Come Early
~ After the attack, the patient re
covers consciousness without any
recollection of what has happened.
Attacks may come only at night so
that occasionally someone may be
epileptic for years without know
ing it,
Semetimes there is a family his
tory of the disease. If this is the
case about four-fifths of those
children who are headed. for epi
lepsy have an attack before they
are four years old. This makes for
an early diagnosis. When there is
no family history the first attack
is likely to come later. * |
The outlook for thé yietim. of
epilepsy is now considered. moré
hopeful than it was several yéa"r"s’
ago. ;
