Ferrer Knows Noses
. Jose Ferrer played “Cyrano de
Bergerac” on Br%aidway by- stick
ing a thimble on His nose with ad
hesive tape and covering it with
putty.
One night he forgot to don the
nose—“l don’t think anyone knew
the difference”—but at the play’s
conclusion he went to the foot
lights, joked about his forgetful
ness and said:
“I guess the nose was stolen by
a bobby soxer. Maybe 100 of ’em
are worth one Sinatra autograph.”
Jose’s Broadway nose cost about
15 cents. Now he’s playing “Cyr
ano” for the movies and producer
Stan Kramer claims he spent SSOOO
in preparing sketches, life fasks,
molds plastics and what not in
developing the famous Cyrano
beezer. -
It measure 234 inches, horizon
tally, from lip to tip and will, no
doubt, give Bob Hope and Jimmy
Durante such inferiority com
plexes that they will give up the
screen forever.
Jose wore the nose home one
night, He was driving a converti
ble. ;
“I had to gtop and put the top
up. I was stopping traffic.”

Maybe Vie Damone will have
better luck, but Mel Torme isn’t
pasting up a picture of Leo the
Lion in’ his book of golden mem

told me:
“I'm disgusted with what hap

crack at good pictures., For nine
years I worked like a beaver to
get acting experience in radio, but
M-G-M ‘ wouldn’t listen to me.
They kept giving me one-song spe

Then he added: “I'm only 24. I
guess it’s a little ridiculous for me
to feel sorry for myself.”
