Junior Assembly School For
Speech Correction Held
Thursday In Michael Clinic
The Junior Assembly School for
Speech Correction is a veritable
bee-hive of activity on each
Thursday morning at the Assem
bly Building. Not only the teach
er, Mrs. Earl Roberts, and the
Junior Assembly aides are pres
ent, but there is a stream of pass- ‘
ers-through, children and parents
coming in for lessons, interested
observers from the University or
a local civic club, or Junior As
sembly members who have been
bitten by the bug of enthusiasm
and return week after week to
check on the improvement of these
students. : |
. The nicest addition to the phy
sical set-up of the school since its
opening in April has been the ac
quisition of a screen for observa
tion. Placed at the class-room
door, this enables parents and oth
er observers to sit unseen by :the
teacher and children and note the
reactions of the pupils, -the
methods of instruction, and the
progress achieved. |
Learning is a slow process, and
frequently improvement is dif~
ficult to note, but in a surprising
number of cases improvement is
marked from week to weekr This
is largely due to the child’s own
interest and effort, and to the co
operation he receives at home.
The training begun in school must
be continued daily, necessitating
diligent practice at home, and
‘with young children particularly,
active participation of the parents.
One six year old, who was told
to practice a certain tongue ex
ercise fifteen times a day was so
anxious to talk like other children
that he did it one hundred times
daily. Of course he showed im
provement,
Twelve children from the ages
of three to twelve are enrolled for
the summer session. Lessons are
held on each Thursday morning
from nine until one o’clock at the
Simon Michael II Memorial Build
ing, while anyone wishing an in
terview may see Mrs, Roberts at
