FROM THE HORSE'S MOUTH: Left to right, Radio MC John
Reed King, Smokey, and Reporter Richard Kleiner, ¥
Reporfer Gives Neigh-By-Neigh
Account Of Interview With Nag
BY RICHARD KLEINER
NEA Staff Correspondent
‘NEW YORK—(NEA)—It doesn’t
take much to collect a crowd in
New York. There I was, simply
interviewing a horse, and a bunch
of gawky people pushed around.
¥ou'd thing something unusual
Wwas going on.
~ Smokey is one of the most in
felligent horses around. For one
thing, he never bets on the races.
For another, he can talk—or al
most talk, anyway. When you ask
‘g:)rg a question, he’ll answer it by
nodding his head yes or no, or
by counting with his right front
hoof. :
"\ He was in New York for a re-
Pearsal. He's making his radio
debut on John Reed King's “Give
nd Take” quiz show. Smokey
Eought with him Joe Phillips, a
rained man who accompanies
him wherever he goes.
% Premature Grey o
‘Smokey is a grey horse. You
might say he’s prematurely grey,
because he’s only nine years old.
He’s been with Phillips, a cowboy
type, for six years. Phillips knows
a lot of stunts by now.
I had decided that I wanted to
talk to Smokey. There was a
once-in-a-lifetime chance to get
some information right from the
horse’s mouth. You might be in
terested in a neigh-by-neigh ac
ecount of our talk.
Q—Well, Smokey, so you're a
trick horsé. How’s tricks?
" A—(Smokey gave me a fishy
stare, a neat trick for a horse).
Q—Tell me, Smokey, where
will the Dodgers finish this year?
A — (Smokey pawed the ground
three times, indicating they’d fin
ish third. I gathered he was a
Philadelphia Filly fan).
Q — What’s your opinion about
fnternational control of the atom
bomb? *
A — (Smokey shrugged his
shoulders. If you've never seen a
horse shrug his shoulders, you've
never lived).
Q — Will the United "Nations
forces be able to hold on to Ko
rea?
A — (Smokey nodded yes, em
phatically.)
Q — Tell me, Smokey, who do
you like in the fifth at Saratoga?
A — (Smokey thought a minute
then pawed the ground eight
times. I never bet on the races,
but the next day_ I notic that
the fifth at Saratoga was won by
a horse named Early Heath. Post
position number eight.) !
: “Old Nag”
Q — Are you married, Smokey?
A — (Smokey snorted with dis
pleasure. Phillips whispered _to
me, something about his wife be
ing an old nag.)
Q — Any children?
A — (Smokey pawed about 10
times, then stopped and shrugged
bhis shoulders again.)
Q — Well, thanks a lot, Smokey.
It was a pleasure talking — if
gou’ll pardon the expression — to
Jou.
A — (Smokey bowed deeply.)
1 walked away, shouldering
through the erowd. I felt kind of

disappointed that T hadn’t gotton ‘
any more opinions from him. As
I walked along, I heard a voice
behind me.
“That guy was asking an awful
lot of personal questions,” the
voice said.
I turned around. The only per- ‘
son with his mouth open was |
Smokey.
SELF DEFENSE!
CHICAGO —(AP)~— Mrs. Mary
Dickson thinks individuals, as well
as nations, should be armed
against aggressors. She was on
her way home from her job as a
waitress one night when a man
tried to grab her. She took a |
firm grip on her blackjack and
struck him a half dozen blows. The |
man beat a staggering retreat.
Ohio State and Southern Meth
