GETTING SALMON IN THE CAN
IS TOUGH JOB FOR ALASKANS
TOURING ALASKA — When
vou open those little cans marked
“Alagka salmon” maybe you think
you're getting something easy for
dinner — a_can opefter and there
you are. It%s all so simple.
But up here where the salmon
go info those little cans the op
erations is nhot easy.
Thig torrespondent tied up for
the night at Petersburg the first
day of the salmon canning sea
son. for. the Kazler-Dahl Cannery.
The rext morning—although it
was Sunday—the cannery whistle
blew long and loud calling the
workérs to their jobs. While the
short zeason lasts the employees
are busy seven days a week. and
countless fishermen are out in
their liitle boats, getting the catch
which for most of them represents
their entire year’s income.
Norwezian Setting
Petersburg is a little community,
largely Norwegian in population,
set against the Alaskan hills in
a part of the territory that might
have been transplanted from Nor
way with its scenic fiords.

It is tidy and well kept, and its
cannery, wjth almost year-round
production giving .employment so
50 persons in addition to those en
gaged in fishing and shrimping,
helps give the economic stability.
The shrimp keep the cannery busy
when salmon and halibut are not
available.
The Kazler-Dahl Cannery has
a plan also, by which it extends
its salmon season,, sending two
planes up into the Yakutat region
These bring fish down from the
distant streams where the ‘salmon
have an early run, to the troller
on which they are hauled in. °
A little plane called a floater is
used, which can land where a
larger one ‘could not. This can
bring down 100 fish at a -time,
supplementing the larger one
which carries many more. In this
way the cannery and the fisher
men both gain, because they are
able to follow the salmon run all
the way to the Petersburg area.
Cut In Chunks
Partially cleaned and ice
packed on the troller they are
then taken across to an adjoining
building where the canning pro
cess was begun. The fish are fed
into a machine which removes
heads, tails and fins, ecut in
chunks, and sent along a con
veyor where they were in
spected finally by workers—
mostly women—who sat on high
stoolg before a counter along
which the conveyor moved.
.Finally they made their way
to Seattle for inspection and label
ing.
Why an inspection office should
not be set up in this part of
Alaska where so many fish are
caught and canned is a question
which has not been satisfactorily
answered for Alaskans to whom
the fishing industry has such im
portance.
Alaska would like to have the
extra revenue that the capning,
and distribution of the salmon
direct from here would bring
and believes that if it had state
hood, some of the inequalities
with which it now copes would
be corrected. -

CZECHS SAVE
PEACH STONES
BENO, Czechoslovakia—(AP)—
People here have been asked to
save stones from such fruits as
peaches and apricots. The Com
munist- newspaper Rovnost said
they should turn them in for use
in manufacturing things like soap,
cosmetics and chemical products.
As we get older, stress and strain, overs
exertion, excessive smoking or exposure to
cold sometimes slows down kidney, funce
tion. This may lead many folks to com
plain of nagging backache, loss of pep and
energy, headaches and dizziness. Getting
up nights or frequent passages may result
from minor bladder irritations due to cold,
dampness or diefary indiscretions.
If your discomforts are due to these
causes, don’t wait, try Doan’s Pills, a mild
diuretic. Used successfully by millions for
over 50 years. While these symptoms may
often otherwise oceur, it's amazing how
many times Doan’s give happy relief —
help the 15 miles of kidney tubgs and filters
flush out waste. Get Doan’s Pills todayl
