was flung open. “It’s I, Mrs. Be
noni,” Gloria said in a small voice,
because now there was nothing to
do but brazen it out and konk the
Benonis first if she had to. “I—
I'm afraid I'm a little late. But I
couldn’t help it.”
Gloria advanced through the
door bravely, clutching her heavy
suede bag and the pie box, which
was by now somewhat crumpled.
“Snoopin’, hunh?” Mr. Benoni
stepped forward menacing
“What's the big idea?” _
“I just wanted to be sure this
was the right place,” Gloria mur
mured, glancing quickly around.
It was the same back room
where she had seen Mrs. Benoni
on that earlier meeting—a kind of
sitting room with no windows,
lighted by a single, bright electric
bulb hanging from the ceiling.
There were several chairs, a couch
im the corner, a table with an open
vanity case on it and underneath
were three suitcases already strap
peéd as if the Benonis were ready
to'go on a long trip. They even had
their hats on, ready for instant
flight, Gloria decided, the moment
Mr. Benoni konked her.
“You got the pie in that box?”
Mr. Benoni demanded and started
toward her. His green hat was
tipped onto the back of his head
;o.that the light shone onto the
scar, white on his swarthy face
and there was an ugly look in his
eyes Gloria didn’t relish.
The catch on her bag stuck but
Gloria got the gat out and pointed
it shakily at Mr. Benoni’s middle
vest button. -
- #Stop!” she ordered. “Stop
right there. I' want to talk to you
first.” : # e
Mr. Benoni stopped so fast he
skidded a little and Mrs. Benoni
cried, “Why, Mrs. Brown!”
“Palk fast,” Gloria warned. “I
want evidence and then you can
have the darn neckless and wel
come because if I never see it
again, It'll suit me fine. I've got
to have evidence to get my hus
band out of jail. Did you see Lofty
kill Jack the Cork? How did he
get my husband’s knife?”
“Off *my kitchen table,” Mrs
ge_noni said, eyeing the pie box in
loria’s left hand. “I saw him. I
was in the vestibule when he
picked it up with one of my tea
towels.” Gloria’s right forefinger
curled suggestively around the
trigger of the gun, and Mrs. Be
noni made no move toward the
pie box. Instead, she added: “He
killed Cork and left the body on
our dumbwaiter because he—he
hated our guts. When a guy gets
into the dope racket—"
“Shut up!” Mr. Benoni said
rudely.
A leather thing appeared sud
denly in his hand and he started
ard Gloria.” She pulled the
of her.gur.\ cgnvulsively.
* But nothing happened. She had
forgotten to remove the safety
catch like Sammy told her to. She
twiddled franticaily, but now Mr.
Benoni was only a couple of steps
away, with the blackjack dangling
from his bear-like arm. “I knew
it wasn’t loaded,” he exulted.
- Desperately Gloria flung the pie
with all her strength straight into
his ugly face.
“You—" He spat out a word
Gloria had not heard in polite
Boston society. He brushed away
apples, sugar and pastry, which
blinded him for a precious second
—almost long enough for Gloria
to dart through the door.
‘Behind her, Mrs. Benoni gave
a little ery as the necklace clat
tered to the floor. But Gloria did
not linger for a glimpse of its
green and gold magnificence. She

was almost through the door when
Mr. Benoni grabbed her so cruelly
she cried out. He lifted the black
jack—he wouldn’t just konk her
now, Gloria knew. He'd make sure
she would never talk again.
“Benny!” Mrs. Benoni scramed
(‘DOn’t!"
Gloria closed her eyes, her
senses whirling in a maelstrom of
terror, put up her arms instinc

curiously, it didn't fall
When Gloria lifted her cowering
head, he was staring over her
head at the doorway beyond, ter
ror slowly congealing his pasty
face, while his arm dropped with
the blackjack dangling nerveless
lv.
Gloria twisted about, gave a
glad. cry. Standing there like the
Marines come galloping, galloping
to the rescue, was a small gray
figure. He would know, Gloria
thrilled happily, how to get the
safety o the gat he was pointing
at Mr. Benoni. 3 g
“Lofty!” Mrs. Benoni, agonized,
flung herself in front of her hus
band, begging, “Don’t shoot, Lofty.
We can explain everything!”
“Mr. Hansen!” Gloria gasped.
“Yeah. How yuh, Toots?” He
threw her a crooked gray grin,
there was a queer sound like a
kid's popgun going off. Mrs. Be
noni stopped begging the man to
listen to her and slid in a sprawl
ing, awkward little heap on the
floor.

A horrible truth dawned on
Gloria. Reuben wasn’t the terri
ble Lofty. The man she knew as
Hansen was. Hansen, the little jan
itor, the man who called her
“Toots,” the man she’d promised
to give a piece of pie, the man
she thought had been protecting
her.
“That’s for Sal,” the little gray
man snarled as he glared down
at what had been Mrs. Benoni an
instant ago. The jewels had fallen
from her hand and winked back
at him like evil little green eyes.
He leaned over, picked up the
necklace and the sneer on his face
seemed to Gloria, who was rooted
there in horror, to grow and grow
until it filled the whole space
about him with nauseous venom.
“So you thought you'd turn the
beads over to the federal dicks,
did you, Benny Boy?” he asked,
sliding the necklace into his
pocket.
“No!” screamed Mr. Benoni.

OLD LAWS WORRY
BRITISH INNKEEPERS
LONDON—(AP)—Laws framed
hundreds of years ago, when high
waymen terrorized the roads, are
worrying British innkeepers. The
matter came to a head after a mo

keeper liable.
The old laws were made for
protection of travelers against
highwaymen. Innkeepers say they
were quite reasonable when
framed, A thief could hardly
break into stables and bring out a
horse, much less harness it to a
carriage or coach, without the
landlord or stable boy knowing it.
Today, they say, a car can be
driven away from a car park with
out the landlord’s knowing that
the driver is not the owner,

EARLY ACTION WOULD PREVENT
MOST APPENDICITIS DEATHS
BY EDWIN P. JGRDAN, M. D.
Written for NEA Service
Though the death rate has been
greatly reduced in recent years,
most deaths from appendicitis
could be avoided entirely. If acute
appendicitis 1s dlagnosed early and
the appendix is removed by sur
gery, there is little danger. How
ever, much of the trouble comes
because the pain may not be as
severe as people expect it to be.
Consequently, they are too like‘lry
to ignore the symptoms for sev
eral days and b, that time the
appendix may have ruptured and
caused peritonitis.
Occasionally the appendix in
stead of lying near the front of
the abdomen on the right side
may be twisted towards the back
so that the only symptom is back

pain. The appendix can lie in some
other part of the abdomen and it
is not safe, therefore, to think that
pain which is in the lower right
side is the only kind which can
mean appendicitis. 5
The use of cathartics or laxa
tives is dangerous. A laxative
causes the wave-Hke motions of
the intestines to increase. Large
waves hasten the rupture of an
acutely inflamed appendix. When
this happens peritonitis develops—
a serious complication indeed.
Laxatives should be avoided like
poison ifthere is the slightest sus

should not be given for the same
reason.

also increase the wave-like mo

acute and located in the right
lower part of the abdomen with
slight fever, there is a good chance
of appendicitis. Of course, this
alone is not enough. Vomiting
commonly accompanies appendi
citis, but diarrhea is almost al
ways absent. The presence of too
many white blood cells almost in
variably accompanies acute appen
dicitis. For this reason a blood
count is most important if appen
dicitis is suspected. @
No chances should be taken
with this important disease. In re
cent years penicillin has often
been given before operation and
afterwards, and this seems to make
the recovery somewhat easier,
With prompt diagnoses and sur

are slight.

Women who try to achieve a
