NEW YORK— (NEA) —You
can buy yourself a cool summer
for less than S3OO these days, and
vou don’t even have to get out of
vour house in the sweltering city.
" How do you pull this off? Just
invest in a room air conditioner
(window type, not the big juke
box floor model). :

unit year-round affair built into
the house. Initial cost is a good
deal more than the window type
conditioners, but cost of fuel for
year-long operation is little more
than the cost of fuel for heating
units alone.
Most window types use freon,
a refrigerant gas. It expands and
absorbs heat from the outside
arr, which is then blown into the
room by one or two fans. A com
pressor turns the gas into liquid

take out the dust.
Sliding Price
A utility company in Chicago
figures that the popular half
horsepower window model will
use about 960. kilowatt hours of
lectricity a season around that
arca, which is pretty humid. At
@ rate of two cents a Kkilowatt
hour, that comes to $19.20 for a
lour-month season. The three
quarter horsepower unit would
iost maybe sl2 more to run.
Before World War II the cheap
€t window wunits cost at least
8650, Now they’re under S3OO (a
trop of S6O in just the last year),
&nd new slashes will come if sales

' The sliding price trend is prob
