Marine Corps Builds Manpower
Faster Than Other Branches
BY CLARK BEACH
WASHINGTON.— (AP) —The
Marine Corps is building up its
strength faster than any of the
other services.
Its present goal is to increase
‘manpower by about 75 percent,
according to Congressional sour
ces. That will bring the corps up
to about 130,000. Its strength was
74,200 before Korea.
Expansion is primarly in ground
forces. The corps has called to
active duty all of its organized re
serve ground units-—the reserves
who keep in training and are p=id
for their military work. It has
also announced that it will call up
50,000 of its volunteer reserves by
October 30. Volunteers do no
peacetime training. They are
mostly war veterans. Informed
persons say it is likely that in time
nearly all the volunteer reserves
will be called up.
Neither the Armvy, Navy or Air
Force has issued any general call
for volunteer reserves, and none
has launched such a sweeping
mobilization of organized reserves
as the Marine Corps. The only re
serve Marine Corps units for
which no plans for active duty
have yet been announced are
some organized reserve air units,
It has long been the contention
of some high officials in the De
fense Department that the Marine
Corps does not need such a large
proportion of air strength to
ground troops as it has had in the
past. Each division has attached
an entire aircraft wing — about
nine to 12 squadrons, comprising
about 7,000 men.
The Marines now fighting in
Korea are elements of the First

Whooping Cough

Deaths Decline
For First Time 1
NEW YORK, N. Y=-Last year |
for the first time, deaths from,
whooping cough in the United
States fell below 1,000, according
to Metropolitan Life Insurance
Company statisticians. The final
figure may be less than 800.
This landmark in the control of
the disease takes on added signifi
cance, the statisticians note, be
cause the number of young chil
dren in the ponulation has in
creased greatly due to high birth
rates in recent years.
The gains against. whooping
courh have been espercially rapid
in the last 10 yvears. In 1948 and
1949 the death rate among infants,
where the bulk of the mortalitv
from the disease is concentrated,
was at least 75 percent below the
fieure of a decade ago.
Even allowing for the cyclical
fluctuations in the occurrence of
the disease, the number of re
ported cases at all azes has de
clined sharplv. In both 1948 and
1949 the number was below 75,000,
while the previous minimum was
nearly 110,000. In the 1930’s the
total only once fell below 150,000.
A substantial part of the credit
for the gains against whooping
cough is given to the wide accep
tance of the vaccines for immuni
zation against the disease, and to
advances in the care of infants
with the disease.
“To cut the death toll during
the early months of infancy still
further, chief reliance must be
placed or: early hospitalization and
high quality of medical and nurs
ing care,” the statisticians point
out. “Another possibility -is to
commence immunization earlier
than is now generally practiced.
Experience shows that this proce
dure is effective in very young
infants and well tolerated by
them.”
LOTS OF HELP
DENVER —(AP)— The Denver
Bears registered four assists on a
strikeout in a Western League
game with Sioux City.
The Sioux City batter swung at
a low pitch which rolled off Catch
er Pierce McWhorter’s glove, The
batter had turned toward the dug
out when his teammates yelled at
him to run. The Bears by this
time were whipping the ball
around the infield in traditional
manner, but they cot it to First
Baseman Moose Wornack in time
for the putout.
Ceramic mosaic tiles, the small
units used widely today for bath
room floors, were first manufact
ured in the United States about a
half a century ago.
Divisiog and elements of the First
Wing. A second division and wing
are still intact on the east coast.
It appears likely that the First
Division, on the West Coast, will
once more be brought up to
strength and that the First Wing
will be once again filled out.
The first volunteer reserves to
be brought back into uniform
will be primarily enlisted men,
since the corps is fairly well sup
plied with officers at present.
Reserves, volunteer or organ
ized, have no choice but to go if
called. A man or woman called
up, however, might obtain a six
month deferment if it is proved
he or she holds an essential or
critical job.
No deferments of reserves are
permitted in any of the armed
services for financial reasons,
such as having to support depend
ents. Men drafted under selective
service, however, still can obtain
such deferments and exemptions
as the law allows, P
After the Marine Corps takes
in the first 50,000 volunteer re
serves, it will still have about 30,-
060 of that group té call in. How
soon these are called or how many
are ever taken depends on the
extent to which Marine aviation
is expanded and on how many
persons volunteer for active duty
in the corps.
The corps has announced that
very few senior officers among
the volunteer reserves will be
taken in. Among such reserves
are James Roosevelt, candidate
for governor of California and
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy (R.-
Wisconsin).
Uisong,” said Captain Stein.
Purpose of the attack was to
slow up the flow of supplies to
North Korean troops. Friday’s
daylight missions were a follow
up to the B-26 attacks made
through the hours of darkness
Thursday and Friday morning.
The toll for the 24-hour con=-
tinuous flying period included
smashed rail supply lines, wrecked
bridges and damaged tunnels in
addition to vehicles and Red-oc
cupied buildings.
TARZAN LIKES REAL AFRICA
NAIRORI, Kenya Colony.—
(AP)—Lex Barker, the latest in
the line of film Tarzans founded
by Elmo Lincoln, finds the great

the American settings previously
used by the jungle men.
“I have never enjoyed anything
more than these gontacts with the

Picture nraking here has its
drawbacks, however. One day an
elephant charged the camp, dislo
