The cottage stood on a little hill.
Pink oleander bushes clustered
about it. Moonlight rippled along
its low whitewashed roof, sharply
outlined the two papaw trees
straight as ramrods, one at either
side of the entrance.
“Come in for a drink?” Ede
asked at the door. !
“Just a quickie. I'll have to get
back soon.”
Ede opened the door, lit a light
in the small vestibule. A telegram
lay on the floor and she picked it
up idly.
“Good news from Pete’s agent,
I hope,” she began. “He certainly
needs . ."” .
She tore open the envelope and
glanced at the lines of the tele
gram. Her eyes halted abruptly
and traveled over the wording
again. Then she stopped again anc
stared at the piece of paper.,
The wire was from her brother
Jeff. It said:
“Father critically ill. Come at
m&.”
White-faced and silent, she
handed it to Gil. He read it, then
put an impulsive arm around her
shoulders.
“Ede, if there’s the slightest
thing Icando .. .”
She steadied herself. “There is
one thing. Go back and collect
Pete. Tell him that I'm flying
home, tomorrow.”
