LOW (COST) FLYING: Inventor Landrum Hughes

OXKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. —
(NE£) — Landrum L. Hughes
flew to Dallas, Tex., the other day
for: 63 cents. . :
Thet's what it cost him for fuel
for the 188-mile hop in his four
place, 145-horsepower plane, and
he hopes that some day automo
hiles and trucks, as well as other
airplenes, will be traveling on' the
same cheap fuel.
The Oklahoma City inventor
does it by using butane gas, which
cocte from five to seven cents a
oallon, instead of gasoline .at 32
cents a gallon.
The trick is in his adapter de

ertificate to use it in planes.
Although airports aren’t likely
t ave butane on hand at the
moment, Hughes was able to re
el on his flight to Dallas by
utilizing a tankful used at the
field for heating buildings. Other
wise, however, he could have

regular tanks.
Since butane is lighter than
gasoline, it compensates for the
weight of the extra tank. But he
is perfecting a method of storing
the gas in the wings of small
planes to eliminate the tank.
Hughes says his butane adapter
has been tried out on cars and
trucks, and works as well as it
does in his planes.
FORGETFULNESS =
MAKES BUSINESS
JACKSONVILLE BEACH, Fla.
—(AP)—People who forget make
a niee business for Bert Sauls. He
is a locksmith. Most of his work
is opening cars, houses and boxes
for people who locked the keys
inside .or lost them.
Sauls has yet to find a safe he
can’t open. The reason safe crack
ers have so much trouble, he said,
is that they just don’t have enough
time.
While Sauls isn’t giving up his
picks and gadgets in favor of the
words “Open, Sesame,” he found
the magic phrase apparently more
effective one time. After more than
45 minutes trying without success
to open a door for a woman, Sauls
leaned against it and it swung
open. It hadn’t been locked in the
first place.
Many times when he is called to
open auto doors he finds a window
open or a door unlocked on the
other side of the car.
On cool summer nights when a
blanket is too heavy for comfort
and a sheet too light, try spreading
on a second top sheet for that
needed extra warmth.
