FOUR AWARDS IN NATIONAL COMPETITION

ers were named winners of
four state awards in the 1950 pro
duction-marketing contest of the
National Junior Vegetable Grow
ers Association as the NJVGA con
cluded its sixteenth annual four
day convention at New Orleans,
La., today.

The Mitchell boy’s project was a
half acre in size, part of his fath
er's 950-acre farm. He grew S2O
worth of vegetables in his plot, for
a net profit of $162, valuing his
own time at 25 ¢ents per hour. The
entire ¢crop was either used at home
immediately, canned, or put into
the home freezer. Rejected vege
tables were fed to the stock. The
boy’s ‘report stressed the impor
tance of soil eonservation and fer
tilization, A viee president of hoth
the 4-H and the FFA Shiloh units,
he is a high school sophomore,
ranking in the “upper 3% ths” of his
class, and is a consistent prize win
ner for his fat calves and garden
ing.

still in the field. Computing on the
basis of expected returns like a sea
soned business man, Bill listed his
total costs at $57, and his net prof-|
its for the season at $393, terming
it a “reasonably good” year. i
He has held the posts of presi
demtt, vice president, and secretary |
of his 4-H club, and is current]x
the reporter for his local FFA!
chapter. He.has won a first award
for swine, and second place fofhis
corn, in past competition. |
