The Old Story That's Ever New
By WILLIAM E. GILROY, D. D,
In thousands of churches, and in
millions of homes, wupon this
Christmas Sunday, the story of the
birth of Jesus will be read and
heard by many who know it so
well that they could probably re
peat it by heart,
It will be read in the gospels by
St. Matthew and Luke and lis
tened to as if it had never been
told before. That old, old story
has lost nothing of its interest and
meaning through the centuries. It
is ever new.
Why does that story of the birth
of Jesus so persist in its newness
and interest? Partly because it is
the story of a mother and a babe;
and mothers and babies, in all the
mystery, love, and devotion that
surrounds them, continue in gen
eration after generation, each suc
cessive gexration of motherhood
and babybbod being a glorifica
tion of the story of Mary of Naza
reth and the Babe of Bethlehem.
Then, too, the story symbolizes
the faith and the hope that each
successive generation has cher-
The Absent Friends At Christmas
We shall not meet around a common board, -
Nor share the gladness of a common roof,
No festive hour shall bring us face to face
In Christmas feast or song. Yet not aloof
From love or life, along the mystiec way
Our spirits shall outrun earth’s trammelled feet
To Bethlehem; and in hearts’ reunion there
By friendship’s highest altar we shall meet.
An ampler feast the gift of God shall spread;
The Christmas song shall richer, fuller be
As there, where Heaven met earth we join to share
The love of Christ with all humanity.

-~ RANGOON ——(AP)— Daily gun

to the Burmese government. Each
is apparently determined to ex

- There are now four White Band
PVO groups. One has accepted the
government’s amnesty terms and
is surrending. A second has
aligned itself with the govern
ment and has sworn to fight other
rebel groups. The third has made
an alliance with the Communists
and will continue to fight the gov
ernment. The fourth group has
sworn to fight just about every-‘

Mother, the Babe, and Joseph,
were at Bethlehem, but there were
others.
Thre lis something rich and
beautiful in the portrayal of Sime

Zacharias and Elizabeth, devout
souls “waiting for the consolation

are waiting in faith and hope to

power and triumph of the Christ.
So, the story of Christ and

newness and charm. Would God
that we might all find the joy and

and of following the Babe born
there, until the abundant life that
