Georgia Thealre
“Macbeth,” Orson Welles® mo
tion picture production of Shake
speare’s immortal drama, which
has played a'series of special en
gagements in a few key cities, will
begin an engagement in Athens
today at the Georgia Theatre,
playing at popular prices. The film
will be shown today and Monday.
Adapted by Welles to appeal to
all moviegoers rather than Shake
speare enthusiasts along, this Mer
cury Production of “Macbeth” vi
vidly highlights the stark drama
of clashing armies, murder and
moral disintegration of a man and
wife goaded by ruthless ambition.
Stormy scenes the stage cannot en
compass are portrayed with thrill
ing effect.
Welles stars as the usurper King
Macbeth, lured to his doom by the
mocking prophecies of three
witches who appear to him on the
storm-blasted heath. Unscrupulous
Lady Macbeth, who first inspires
him to thoughts of treason, is pow
erfully portraved by top-ranking
radio actress Jeanette Nolan in her
first screen role, Important parts
are played by Dan O'Herlihy, Rod
dy McDowall, Edgar Barrier and
Alan Napier. The Chas. K. Feld
man Groups-Mercury Production
was filmed at Republic studios.
To Give Bird
Dr. A. A. Allen, well-known or
nithologist and Cornell University
professor, will speak at the Uni
versity of Georgia April 9 during
the University’s Sesquicentennial
observance.
His bird lecture will be illus
trated with a kodachrome movie,
“Birds on the Home Front.” Dr.
Allen’s address, scheduled for 8
p. m. in the University Chapel will
be sponsored by Sigma Xi, hon
orary scientific organization.
Dr. Allen, a graduate of Cornell,
has been professor of ornithology
there since 1925. In addition to his
teaching he is a lecturer and an
explorer, having conducted orni
thology expeditions to Colombia,
Labrador, Hudson Bay, Europe,
Panama, Mexico, and Alaska.
He is in charge of the ruffed
grouse investigations of the Amer-~
ican Game Association and is the
discoverer of the method of rear
ing ruffed grouse in captivity. For
this work he was awarded the
Outdoor Life Medal.
Dr. Allen is the author of a
number of books about birds in
cluding “The Book of Bird Life,”
“American Bird Biographies,” and
“The Book of Birds.” He has also
directed the production of phono
graph albums on “American Bird
Songs and Voices of the Night.”
