Pqultry production now ranked in
‘qeird place in Georgia from the
‘andpoint of cash farm income,
rith broilers alone being valued
‘t approximately $50,000,000 in
‘e state in 1950, Arthur Gannon
sgricultural Extension Service
oultryman, said today.
“Cash income from poultry and
¢gs exceeded that from the sale
~f all beef cattle and dairy pro
ucts eombined in 1950,” Gannon
tated, *and it was much larger
hlan the total income from pecans,
eaches, apples and all other fruit
rons.”
The poultry specialist continued
‘hat nine additional North Georgia
ounties were added to the list of
hose where commercial broilers
wre grown on a large scale in
950, making a total of 30 Georgia
ounties in this business.
“Thileboilers are grown to a limit
d extent in a few South Georgia
sounties, the business has never
Aeveloped outside the North Geor
sia area as an industry. :
“Kach week some 300,000 to
500,000 more chicks are started in
North Georgia than were started
the same week one year before,
Gannon pointed out. He called at
tention to this in summaries is
sned weekly by the Georgia Crop
Reporting Service.
Total broiler production in 1950
fn Georgia amounted to 62,890,000,
a 38 percent increase over 1949,
With this increase Georgia
elimbed into second place in the
nation as a broiler growing state,
replacing Maryland in the num
ber two position.
Other states ranked in the order
of number of broilers grown in
1950 are: Arkansas, Virginia, Tex
as, India, North Carolina Cali
fornia and Mississippi. ;

THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
A fairly frequent cause of fail
ing vision, and probably one which
is becoming more frequent because
more of us are living longer, is
cataracts. This is primarily a dis
order of the later years of life al
though hereditary cataracts can be
present at birth.
In this condition objects which
used to be clearly and easily seen
appear fuzzy and indistinct. Spots
or haloes and similar objects often
appear to be floating around in the
air.
As time goes on the vision be
comes more and more blurred and
eventually complete loss results,
Even in the early stages the elder
ly person who has been used to
sewing or reading a great deal or
performing some other close work
with the eyes is sadly afflicted.
But there.is a good side to this
picture. T h e trouble lies in that
portion of the eye known as the
lens which serves just like the lens
of a camera. The lens of the eye
becomes cloudy in cataract and
finally refuses to let the light

However the lens can be remov

SHORTER WAIT
There has been no way discov
ered of preventing cataracts or of
dissolving them out by medicines.
These things may come some day,
and even now it is not always
necessary to walt until a cataract
has become hard or “ripe” in or
der to operate,
This improvement alone may
save a person from months or
years during which the vision
might otherwise be getting grad
ually worse,
