This week we have been making

potato race, a red ribbon in the
50 yard dash, and a yellow ribbon
in the all throw, Coryell McCune
and David Patman got blue rib
bons in the rescue relay. David
Smith won a blue ribbon in the
potato race. .
We made cards to go with our
mothers’ gifts. The gifts were tray
cloths with original designs sten
ciled on them. We used textile
paint so it won’t wash out. We
wrapped our gifts and tied them
with pink ribbon.
We saw an interesting movie on
finger painting. Our teacher
brought us some finger paint and
we had a good time making de
signs with our hands.

We had a nice time last Tuesday
morning at Dudley Field on Field
Day. The winners for some of
the events were as follows:

After the many stunts we all
enjoyed a ball game by a mixed“
group of fourthfifth, and sixth
grade boys. l
Miss Wallace’s Class
Field Day was held at our school
on Tuesday. No girls from the
school took part in the events but
most of our boys won ribbons in
some events. Those winning rib
bons were: Alex Bevers and Alton
James first place in rescue relay;
Andy Mapp, Tommy Morris and
Eddie Spence, first place in pota
to relay; Donald Mathews, third
place in ball throw, Eddie Spence,
second place in ball throw; Eddie
Spence, first place in fifty yard
dash with Tommy Morris taking
fourth place. Four and fifth grades
competed against each other.
Our emphasis in English last
week was on business letters. We
made a careful study of correct
form, courtesies and rules to fol
low in writing business letters.
Every member of the class wrote
a business letter, addressed the
envelope and mailed it. We hope
to get replies soon. 3
In art we designed attractive
tray covers for our mothers by
using the rubber tube block prints
we made. These were painted
with textile paints. Miss Martin
mixed very pretty coolrs and we
chose our color combinations.
Some of us used all negative
prints, some all positive, while
some of us decided to use both
positive and negative. We also
made designs and spatter painted
cards to be used with our gifts,
Mrs. McCoy’s Class
We had field day Tuesday morn
ing at 9 o’clock. The first event
was the three legged race, Jerry
Tate and Fambro Knight won first
place and Bobby Stephens and
Gary Doster won second place.
Next was the seventy-five yard
dash, first Jerry Tate, second Fam
bro Knight, third Johnny Tolbert,
fourth Cloyce Lee. In the ball
throw, first Cloyce Lee, second
Johnny Tolbert, third Jerry Tate.
In the potato relay Gary Doster
and Bobby Stephens won first
place and in the baton relay, first
Pete Martin, Jerry Tate, Fambro
Knight, Bobby Stephens, Danny
Poole, and Johnny Tolbert. After
the relays we had a ball game.
Cloyce Lee and Gary Doster
went to Washington, D. C. Thurs
day afternoon at 4 o’clock. They
got back at 9 o’clock Sunday
morning and had a very nice trip.
In social studies we are study
ing Germany. We like it very
much; it is a very interesting topic.
We are working very hard to fin
ish our social studies book.
In science we are studying how
planes can fly, how they are made
and the kinds of planes.

Pupils At Barrow
Enjoy Play Day
Last week on Play Day the first
grade had running races. The sec
ond grades had relay races.
Every week we have a picture
on the board and some pupils
make stories. We like them very
much.
Then we had the paper sale.
Our class has $5.76. We are trying
to find out what we want to buy.

read. We are having lots of fun
this month.

THE SCHOOL
There are many schools in Ath
ens. But my school is the very
best of all. We have many good
teachers an da very good school.

Miss Anne Tabor’s Class
The class has been hearing 2
story about Robinson Crusoe dur
ing story hour. Robinson Crusoe’s
ship was wrecked and he was the
only man who was not swallowed
up by the waves. He swam to an
island, buiJt a house for himself,
anr leraned how to live happily
alone. A dog and a parrot were his
only companions, We wonder if
he will always live on the island.
We will have to finish the book to
find out.
Dickie Henderson’s father took
a picture of the whole class re
cently. Melissa Daniel brought
her camera to school and took pic~
tures of the class after the Play
Day games.
The whole school had a very
nice tinre on Play Day. Each class
played a game or ran a race while
the audience watched. The third
grades ran relay races.
We have been reviewing ola
steps in arithmetic and learning a
new multiplication table this week.
Our class is learning the words
in the last chapier of the spelling
book, We will soon begin a spell
ing book review.
Mrs. Schofield’s Class
It is terribly exciting to watch
our garden growing right outside
our window. All our plants are
coming up and seem to be grow
ing even as we look. We hope to
eat some of our cztuce for lunch
soon. We hope we can share it
with everybody.
_We are proud of our mothers
for coming to P. T. A. Gur room
won the attendance prize last
week.
We have added two new sword
fish to our tropical aquarium.
They certainly are interesting to
watch.
We're glad it's warm weather
and flowers are in bloom. We love
to brighten our room with beauti
ful roses, pansies, iris and lilies.
We appreciate Miss Bird’s fourth
grade sharing three bullfrog tad
poles with us. They were enor
mous —the biggest we had ever
seen., G

for Monday afternoon after school.
We will play softball and hike

out to Memorial Park., We think
it will be lots of fun.
In spite of all of these things,
'we are still working hard trying
to finish up our work and then
review all we have learned this
year,
Mrs. Douglas’ Class
Friday, May 9, was Field Day,
‘Each grade played a gathe, The
fifth grade girls played volleyball,
‘We all enjoyed it very much.
Eugene Fouche was chosen as
the Patrol boy from our room to
go on a free trip to Washington,
D. C. Five boys were chosen from
‘Barrow School. They left Thurs
day afternoon and will return
Sunday. We are looking forward
to Eugene’s report of the interest
ing things he saw in Washington,

They are very colorful and attrac
tive. We had fun making them.
We are looking forward to our
May Day Festival on May 17th.
Our dance is a Lithuanian dance
called “Kalvelis,” We like it very
much. All of the grades are going
to do “The Chimes of Dunkirk.”
Mrs. Ison is teaching us some
pretty songs for our concert May
24th. The fifth and sixth grades
will sing,

back in school.

Mrs. Dunson’s Class
We are very proud to have a
champion award hanging in our
room. On Monday the girls won
over Mrs. Mills’ girls, 12-8, with
one less inning, while the boys
were trampled, 16-2, with an off
day. We were very proud to have
&bbie Suddath knock a homer in
e girls’ game, while in the boys’
Joe Inglis and Marvin Jones were
hitting. The other room boys
knocked several.
Thursday Joe Inglis and Frank
Bowden from our room left for
Washington, D, C. They really de
served the trip given to outstand
ing patrolmen.
In citizenship we have Group
1,2, 3 and 4. From last week most
of us are satisfied but some will
try to improve it even more.

luncheon set for our Mother’s Day

were so good she borrowed some
of our prints and made one for

have not been absent since school

We had a good time at our May
Day program Friday, May sth. The

time. The weather was cool and
we did not get hot and tired. I

to go home because I had to go to

May Day we danced. We were
very happy. We kept time with
the music. The girls said our
dance was good. The teachers
helped us. Their names were
Miss Lois, Miss King, and Miss
Thompson. Jimmy’s brother was
the king. We did our very best.
The queen was Jean Hancock. We
did Pop Goes the Weasel. The

Schoole is almost out, but w

We have had three children
with perfect attendance for the
year. They are Carline Wilson,
Shelvy Jean Epps, and Annie
Maude Caspar.
Miss Marin, our University art
teacher, came twice this week, We
made crayon scratch pictures and
colorful paper animals. This was
lots of fun.
Sunday is Mother’s Day and we
want to say to all our mothers,
we love you.

test Tuesday night at 8 o'clock.
We hope all of our parents will

are busy ones. We are trying to

This week we have all been
very busy practicing for our
Spring Concert. It will be given

We have been learning about
the Civil War in our social studies.
We learned aboug the: many great
men who were léaders then, such
as Andrew Jackson, Davy érock
ett, Generals Lee and Grant, and
Abe Lincoln and others.
In art we are learning to
“scratch” pictures. It is very in
teresting and we enjoy it very
much. It is done with wax eray
ons. Some of us have enjoyed
working with black prints.
In arithmetic we are learning
to divide with three numbers in
the division,
We are very proud of Mack
Cooper, Max Wall, and Kenneth
Short, our three patrolmen, who
are on their trip to Washington.

Miss Betts’ Class
An Thursday a committee from
our room went to town to buy
some things for our room. We
used some of the money we made
from the sale of paper, scrap iron,
and clothes hangers. We bought
a kick ball, football, bingo sets,
Chinese checkers, and a mcil
sharpener. On Friday after ch
we had a surprise party.
This week we finished our
study of the Renaissance. We had
a picture about the Renaissance
and enjoyed it very much.
Some of us have finished our
work in science. Those who have
made reports have turned in thei
science books.
We are enjoying our art work
very much. We made mats for our
mothers.
