KILLER’S PACE
BY JULIUS LONG
Chapter XXXVII
Carl Prater looked around wild
ly, imploring someone to believe
him. “Yes, I was there when Fran
nie was drowned, and Bidault
made me sign a confession. But I
didn’t kill him! I swear I didn’t.”
«1 pelieve you,” said Star gent-
Jv. “At first T was sure Wertheim
followed old Barney home. He
was respectably married and his
contract with the firm was gen
erous. But I was convinced other
wise. 1 wonder, Inspector, if I
might call in a private detective I
engaged?”
Merica nodded and Star opened
the door, Paul Waltz stepped in.
At Star’s request, Waltz began.

ing a bank, I'll say Bank X, re
ported Mr. Wertheim had with
drawn SIOOO in twenties, and this
afternoon Bank V reported that
Miss Clara Mayhew deposited
SIOOO in twenties.
Waltz folded his notebook as
Star turned to Merica.
“It's oLvious Miss Mayhew col
lected blackmail money from Mr.
Wertheim—by the not very subtle
strategy of wearing the very yel
low bathing suit that Werthiem,
through a lamentable oversight
had left in the dressing room when
he removed it to dress Frannie's
dead body in street clothes.
“When Mr. Marshall, my assis
tant, told me that Miss Mayhew
had worn a bathing suit identical
to those worn by the La Jolla line,
I knew that it had come from La
Jolla Club. :
“I realized the truth. She had
found it the morning after Fran
nie Martin’s murder; perhaps she
identified it at once and put two
and two together.”
Clara Mayhew was very . pale
despite her make-up. Star aimed
an accusing finger at her.
“Wertheim was only small-fry
to you, Clara Mayhew, yet you
were shrewd enough to collect
blackmail whenever you could!
You knew Jim Marshall and Smi
ley Wetlauffer were there for no
casual business reason yesterday,
and that Wertheim knew it. So
you chose the opportunity to don
the tell-tale bathing suit and scare
the stuffing out of him.
“But Carl Prater was to be your
big chance. You knew that he had
been with Wertheim; you prob
ably snooped till you pieced to
gether the whole story. You had
more than enough pressure to put
on him—you could be Mrs. Prater
with ease! You didn’t have to be
afraid of -him either, for he's not
the killer type.
“But you are, Clara Mayhew!
And you haa the opportunity to
kill Barney Bidault after he
threatened Prater with a gun and
obtained his confession the night
of the murder,” Star looked at
Prater.
“Don’t talk tilt your lawyer gets
here!” screamed Clara.
* * *
Prater eyed her dully, then ig
nored her. “I thought she was in
my car outside, but she could have
followed Barney in. She was gone
when I went out to my car and
the next morning she bawled me
out for making her wait so long.
I sent her orchids.”
“There it is, Merica. The answer
to Barney Bidault’s murder! Clara
Mayhew saw the ruin of her big
marital hope if she didn't take
quick action. She followed old
Barney home ir. Prater’s car. She
finally caught up with him in Rose
Bidault's private sitting room. She
slugged him from behind, took the
gun and killed him. Also she took
the confession.
~ “She knew whnen she read Rose
‘Bidault’s statement in th e news
parper that Rcse had been in the
‘room beyond all the time. She
‘didn’t think it possible that Rose
‘would conceal the truth if she
‘knew it, but she got to brooding
over it and decided to play safe.
She used her lunch hour yester
day to sneak into the Bidault
house and stab Rose with a pair
of scissors while she slept. That
use of scissors was my first tip
that,a woman was the killer. I
can hardly imagine a man using
such a weapon.
“After my assistant revealed to
Larry Stone that Rose had ad
mitted that he had been with her,
Stone became frightened and sum
menced McNamara for legal advice
McNamara packed the informa
tion to an earlier client, Carl Pra
ter, who had hired him after old
Barney had obtained his signed
confession.. Miss Mayhew, his re
ceptionist, probably listened in on
the conversation via the inter
office communication unit on her
desk.
“She had to commit still another
murder to preserve the good thing
she had. She couldn't afford risk
ing the . possibility that Larry
Stone had seen her.” Star turned
on the now completely sober Smi
ley Wetlauffer. “Mr . Wetlauffer,
did you go to Stone’s apartment
tonight at your suggestion or Miss
Mayhew’s?”
« & %
Smiley swallowed. “The truth
is I'd been drinking too much. I
don’t really remember much
about how we got there.”
“Exactly!” Star grinned his tri
umph. “And you don’t remember
much that happened after you got
there, do you?”
“Well, no. We went in—l guess
the lath must have been unlocked
and I sat down. I think I poured
myself a drink from Stone’s bar.
Yes, now I remember—Clara said
she wanted to powder her nose!
Anyway, I didn’t see her for a
while, and then she said I should
look for Stone.”
Star nodded. “So you looked
into the nearest bedroom and
found him dead! Clara Mayhew
knew you would find him dead,
for she had taken advantage of
his condition and killed him with
a blow from the phone receiver—
or anything else handy!”

GERMAN WURST SHOULD
BE AT ITS BEST
FRANK FURT, Germany—(AP)
German meat dealers are putting
everything they've got into their
wurst these days. They want to
get back on the American market
‘with old-time specialties like Ger
'man-made bratwurst, blutwurst,
bockwurst, and frankfurters.
Time was when hungry Ameri
cans could sit down to a big plate
of sauerkraut decked over with
fat, juicy sausages direct from
Germany. But now the U. S. De
partment of Agriculture is closely
studying Germany’s food and meat
laws for sanitation, health and
quality. When they finish a com
mittee of Allied High Commission
men and West Germany govern
ment representatives will inspect
about 10 per cent of Germany’s
food processing plants.
If the report is favorable, Amer
ica’s sausage lovers can start tuck
ing their napkins under their
chins. :
