E. . Smith, Jr.,
By Church Body
The following resolution on the
death of E. I. Smith jr., prominent
Athenian, was recently adopted by
the Session of First Presbytesian
Church:
EDWARD INGLIS SMITH, JR.
Mr. Edward Inglis Smith jr.,
was born in Athens, May 11, 1887,
to Edward Inglis Smith and Sarah
Garland Lucas Smith, He was
educated in the schools of Athens,
Ga., and on February 8, 1912, mar
ried Hart Wylie of Atlanta. He
died unexpectedly in KEatonton,
Ga., April 21, 1951. Besides his
wife, there survived him the chil
dren Laura Isabel Smith, Hart
Wylie Smith Shiver, Susan Carl
ton Smith, Edward Inglis Smith,
111, and a grandson, Samuel Moore
Shiver, IIL
In civic life he was in the bank
ing business from 1912 to 1928;
from 1828 until his death in the
insurance business; and from 1928
through 1948 he was County
Treasurer.
In this church he rendered one
of the longest periods of service in
its history. On January 10, 1926
he was elected deacon and was
installed January 17, 1926. On Oc
tober 14, 1928 he was elected a
ruling elder and was installed in
that offite November 25, 1928. For
a quarter of a century he served
his church a$ treasurer. In this
most tiresome of duties, he was
always faithful and never com
plaining, Without help he dis
charged the duties of this office
until ill-health and the pressure
of his own business made it too
difficult to give the great amount
of time demanded by this work.
- Complete Confidence
For years unknown to comfort,
and acquainted with grievous suf
fering, he was even denied the re
lief of unbroken sleep. But still
unmurmuring, his spirit was that
of the little child which his Master
chose as the special character of
those who might become citizens
of the Kingdom of God—trusting,
upward looking, without malice,
turning with untroubled confi
dence to his Father.
No wonder that he was called to
his eternal rest unexpectedly; no
wonder that he returned home as
quietly, as simply, as peacefully
as he had always lived. With few
words and many actions, he wrote
the history of a faithful friend and
servant upon the hearts of all who
knew him.
~ In the spiritual memorial which
he has grandly built and which is
now especiallv the heritage of this
church, and also of all who really
knew him, he has demonstrated
that in this time of strife, uncer
tainty, war among nations, and
unhappy controversy even within
the church, it is possible to live
without envy, or malice; without
useless conflict and contention;
without useless words and wvain
repetitions; without petty sectari
an narrowness; without attempt
ing to be your brother’s judge;
without making one’s interpreta
tion of religion a cause of separa
tion instead of a means of growing
together in Christian grace and
brotherly love. He lived above
the maudlin strain of superficial
busy work, the externalities of
ceremony, and, without show he
manifested the living of a simple,
trusting and thoroughly trusted
Christian gentleman. Such is the
inheritance he has left us. “An in
heritance incorruptible, and un
defiled, and that fadeth not away.”
In sadness we accept it; in quiet
reverence we now make this me
morial of it. We shall not forget
it. And though we mourn his de
parture, we commend to his fami
lv, to his friends, and to ourselves
the thought that eternal life will
not find a more congenial soul.
