MUTE TESTI M ONY TO FURY OF WAR — A shattered tree stands like a gaunt sentinel before the war-wrecked
remains of a bridge over the Han River, a natural barrier on the western front in South Korea,
The Gold Mannequin
By Myles Connolly i
THE STORY: An artist known
only as “Teresa, General Delivery,
Cedarbrook, N. Y.,” has saved the
exclusive gown shop of “Jean
Paul” from financial disaster. Paul
Panciera becomes a figure in the
fashion world, when suddenly the
flow of sketches from Teresa stops.
His partner, the model Jean Ro
land, sends a decoy envelope to
Teresa, and trails Hidge, the farm
girl who calls for it, to the Sum
mit Veterans’ Hospital, where Jean
discovers that Teresa is a veteran
named Tim Reese, who has been
crippled since Normandy. Tim had |
started to design as a means ot\
obtaining money for an operation
to make him walk. He had used
the name Teresa (T-reese-a) to
avoid ridicule from his buddies.
But the operation had not been
successful and Tim, discouraged,
had given up his calling.

IX
Tim Reese mused a moment be
fore he gave Jean Roland an
answer, “I guess the best way to
answer that is to finish the story.
At the end of summer, when I had
earned enough money, I went to
Boston for the operation. That was
when I stopped sending sketches to
Jean Paul. Well, I just got back.
THE BANNER-HERALD, ATHENS, GEORGIA
As you can see, the operation !
didn’t work.” . ‘
“But you haven’t lost interest in
living, have you?” Jean was grop- ‘
ing for the right attack. |
“Not altogether. But it’s kind of
hard to stand up and cheer when
a pair of nurses have to lift you in
and out of bed. And sitting here,
the way I am, looking at a wo
man as beautiful as you doesn’t
make me break out all over with
happiness. I'm afraid I'm not
what could be called a hero. I am
going to ride with the tide from
now on in.”
Jean was worried. She saw Jean ‘
Paul—luxury, acclaim—vanishing
before her eyes. She drew on her‘
‘ resources, became subtle, soft, She
' who had been modeling the cool
[sophisticate now began to model
the seductress.
“You'd never give a thought to
| me, I suppose? And why I came
out here today?”
She stood a step or two away
fro mthe wheel chair and her eyes,
looking down at Tim grew soft
and friendly.
“I'm giving a lot of thought to
you right now.” He laughed quiet
ly. “Though I must say there’s
more than thought involved when
a man, even a man in a wheel
chair, looks at you.”
* * ®
She moved closer, grew intimate.
*This may sound silly—but if I've
got anytwhere, it’s because of you.
It’s,your creations that 'm known
for.”
He blinked in disbelief. “You
don’t mean to tell me that you and
Jean Paul depend that much on
me, do you?”
“Oh, no! The firm doesn’t but
I do.” His sudden statement of the
truth threw her off balance but
she recovered quickly. “I'm not
the firm. I'm a model.”
He glanced at the mink coat, was
amused. “For an employee, you
seem to be doing all right.”
“T can wear anything they
have.” She smiled her best smile,
purred. “I had to impress you,
didn’t 1?”
He didn’t even question the idea
that the clothes she wore were
more than she could afford and
therefore not her own. Tim Reese
at the moment was not questioning
anything because he was so wrap
ped up in what he saw before his
wheel chair, He had completely
Jost himself in her eyes. He drew
a deep breath. “Holy mackerel, but
you're beautiful,” he mumbled.
She sensed triumph. “You will

Her voice was softer, more inti

A Message to Georgia Motorists
As the statewide bank of Georgia, the welfare and progress of the people of the State
sos interest o us. Especially is this true when the issue may involve their money and
property. Such is the case with the new SAFETY RESPONSIBILITY hAW, ofieo
tive July 1, 1951. | : : kol
gl s e
“Accidents will happen”—as thousands of motor vehicles roll the roads of ovr Jaée
daily. Unfortunately in too many cases the person responsible for an accident has boen
irresponsible otherwise, carried no insurance, had no means to pay for damage cawsed.
" The New Safety Responsibility Law ‘
: is designed to help that situation
The law is too comprehensive to be outlined here. The important thing is to realize
that it must be taken seriously. Failure to comply with it can resukt i loss of driver’s k
license and the right to put a car on the highway. ‘
The law requires every motorist to carry adequate insurance to cover clair;u arising
from an accident—or be prepared to give bond or other guaranty of financial respom | -
sibility. It is not intended to force people to buy insurance. It is designed to make them f"
financially responsible for damage caused. Actually, insurance is the best pretection in P
the situation. ’ '
We have no insurance to sell. There is nothing selfish in our recommendation that you
consult your insurance agent to get full details about the new law and proper protection :
under it. Money and Money Management is our business. We arc merely trying to belp. =
