One of the two stacks for America’s greatest liner, the SS
United States, makes a background for 10 automobiles as it rests
alongside the drydeck in which the 990 foot superliner is under con
struction at Newport News, virginia for the United States Lines.
¥ach of these funnels is made of aluminum and is more than 60 feet
long, and 55 feet high, and will be liited aboard the vessel in two
horizontal sections by means of giant cranes. The stacks have “Sam
pan” tops like the “America,” The “United States,” which will be
launched June 23, is scheduled to join the S 8 America in the
United States Lines’ New York-Europe express service in the sum
mer of 1952,

IRON LUNG'S SUCCESSOR—This revolutionary new machine
that regulates breathing of polio patients by use of electric shock
impulses has been developed by two German doctors, Walter Hof=-
man and Herbert Knodt. Called the “Electro-Lung,” the device
weighs only 28 pounds, costs about $475, and is said to perform the
same functions as the conventional iron lung. Dr. Knodt and a
nurse are seen adjusting the lung so a young patient in Berlin.
