low Blood Pressure Catises
790 Much Unnecessary Worry

«please tell me what to do for

\irs. G. and & lot of others are
equally interested in the question.
[ don’t know why so mrany peo
sle get disturbed because their
lood pressures are lower than
what they think should be normal,
put Mrs. G.'s doctor was certainly
[icht in saying low blood pressure
. hetter than high. As a matter of
(ot most people with low blood
ressures are well off and can ex
pect a long life.
There are few except.ons: There
is a condition known 7§ Addison’s
Jisease which, amor.Z other symp
oms, is charaeterizig by a low
slood pressure; but this is rare.
There are not many other condi
tions which are accompanied by
low blood pressure and which
have any serious significance.
There are several things which
help to determine whether the
blood pressure will be low, high,
or normal: The pump-like action
of the heart is one, The elasticity
of the arteries is another. In most
cases of below “normal” blood
oressure the cause seems to be
exceptionally elastic arteries and
this is a good thing, For one, it
cenerally means that hardening of
{he arteries will be slow to develop
and this in turn has much to do
with the expectation for a long

It is hard to say whether there
are any symptoms which can be
blamed on low blood pressure and
nothing else. Some people who
have low pressure also complain
of lack of pep, but this is just as
likely to arise in the mind as it is
from the pressure. Even if the
blood pressure should have some
thing to do with complaints of this
sort, there is not much that can
be done about it.
Better Left Alone
There is no good, safe way to
raise the blood pressure and it
is better left alone in most cases.
If anemia or some other disorder
is also present, it should be treated
on its own account.
Low blood pressure causes a
great deal of unnecessary worry.
With exceedingly few exceptions
the person with below nornral
pressure can consider himself or
herself lucky, and does not need
to do anything about it,
For the first time in history,
43,000 Negro 4-H club members in
Georgia have a chance to compete
for awards in 4-H projects offered
nationally by the National Com
mittee on Boys and Girls Club
Work, Chicago.
Corn to be used for grain should
be harvested when dry and not
left in the field to be damaged by
weather, insects and animals.

NEW YORK, July 12—(AP)—
Four of Georgia Sherif Bill Har
ris’ “Junior Deputies” en their
first trip away from home were
the delighted, awed and over
whelmed guests of the city today.
The little negroes, aged 12 and
13, even now have a chauffered
limousine placed at their disposal
by Mayor Vincent R. Impelliteri
and before they leave there will be
a reception at the city hall by the
mayor himself.
Harris, sheriff of Chatham
county, Savannah, Ga., identified
his charges as Joe Louis Singleton,
Albert Gottrell, James Shell and
Delbert Glover.
The “junior deputy” organiza
tion is patterned after New York’s
Police Athletic League (PAL) and
each year four white and four ne
gro boys earn trips to New York
via Washington.
They are selected through a pro
cess of elimination that includes
radio quiz contests, outstanding
scholarship and effort.
Basic principle of the organiza
tion, said Harris, is to make good
citizens out of the children.
And one of the foundations of
good citizenship, he added, is an
understanding of what the law is
and how law enforcement organi
zations function.
Last night the boys visited the
Hayden Planetarium and today
they will see the sights and then
watch a baseball game between
the Brooklyn Dodgers and the Chi
cago Cubs. And what’s more they
are going to have their picture
taken with Jackie Robinson, ne
gro Dodger star.
When they reached Washington
they were greeted by FBI Direc
tor J. Edgar Hoover who arranged
for a tour that included a trip to
the rifle range where they fired
guns. .
The visit will be concluded Fri
day morning with the visit to the
mayor. They will return to Wash
‘lngton Saturday and start the trip
home by car Sunday morning.
The average Georgia per acre
yield of wheat in 1950 was 12.5
bushels; oats, 27 bushels; cotton
227 pounds of lint; corn, 16.5
bushels, and ‘peanuts, 900 pounds.
According to Extension Service
livestock specialists Georgia is
now producing lambs equal to the
best. and they bring top prices be
cause they reach the market first.
In Georgia this year, 119,940
boys and girls are enrolled in 2,292
community 4-H clubs.
